Analysis of the correlation between children's eating behavior and parent's feeding style using canonical correlation analysis [Çocuklarda Yeme Davranisi ile Ebeveyn Besleme Tarzi Arasindaki Iliskinin Kanonik Korelasyon Analizi ile Incelenmesi]

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between eating behaviors of children in kindergarten and nursery classes and the feeding styles of their parents with canonical correlation analysis. Material and Methods: Cross-sectional study data collected with the Children's Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) and Parent's Feeding Style Questionnaire (PFSQ) were used. CEBQ data were considered the dependent variable and PFSQ data the independent variables. Canonical correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between two sets. Results: There was a statistically significant correlation between CEBQ sub-dimensions with PFSQ sub-dimensions at the same direction (r=0.475, p<0.001). Statistically significant correlations were determined between Food approach subscales that indicate appetite in CEBQ and PFSQ sub-dimensions at the same direction (r=0.252, p=0.001). Statistically significant and same direction correlations were determined between Food avoidant subscales that indicate low appetite in CEBQ and all sub-dimensions of PFSQ (r=0.440, p<0.001). Conclusion: Parents need accurate and current evidence to allow their children to develop correct eating behavior and to prevent obesity or failure to thrive. By widespread usage of PFSQ, CEBQ and appropriate assessments of their results, data on feeding styles of parents and eating behavior of their children could be obtained, which may be used to develop healthy eating behavior and conscious parenting. Assessments of studies with multivariate statistical methods such as canonical correlation analysis in the health field could make it easier to draw conclusions for the purpose of the use of the scale. © 2013 by Türkiye Klinikleri.
