Does Sericin, as a Novel Pleurodesis Agent, Have Higher Effectiveness Compared to Talcum Powder, Doxycycline, and Silver Nitrate Pleurodesis?

Yazicioglu, Alkin | Uysal, Serkan | Sahinoglu, Tuba | Subasi, Mahmut | Demirag, Funda | Yekeler, Erdal

Introduction: The usefulness of sericin as pleurodesis agent has previously been described. Present study aims to compare sericin pleurodesis regarding success, effectiveness, tolerability, and side-effects. Methods: Adult, 12-week-old Wistar-albino rats (n = 60), divided to five groups as sericin, talcum-powder, doxycycline, silver-nitrate and control. Agents were administrated through left thoracotomy, rats sacrificed twelve-days after. Results: Highest ratio of collagen fibers was observed in sericin group, and the intensity was higher than talcum-powder group (p < 0.05). Compared to silver ...Daha fazlası

Simultaneous bilateral correction of genu varum with Smart frame

Ozkul, Baris | Camurcu, Yalkin | Sokucu, Sami | Yavuz, Umut | Akman, Yunus Emre | Demir, Bilal

Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate clinical and radiological results of simultaneous bilateral correction of genu varum with Smart frame. Methods: Between 2011 and 2015, a total of 25 patients (10 females, 15 males) who had bilateral genu varum deformity were operated bilaterally with tibial and fibular osteotomy in the same session, using Smart frame. The mean follow-up period was 28.7 (range, 13-45) months. All patients had bilateral tibial varus deformity. Femoral deformity was corrected in an earlier session in nine patients. Mechanical axis deviation (MAD), mechanical lateral d ...Daha fazlası

Ultrasonic Evaluation of the Flexor Pollicis Longus Tendon Following Volar Plate Fixation for Distal Radius Fractures

Kara, Adnan | Celik, Haluk | Bankaoglu, Mujdat | Oc, Yunus | Bulbul, Murat | Sugun, Tahir Sadik

Purpose To evaluate with ultrasound the thickness of the flexor pollicis longus (FPL) tendon and its relationship to the volar locking plate after the fixation of distal radius fractures. Methods We evaluated 27 type C2 and C3 distal radius fractures with ultrasound to evaluate damage to the FPL tendon after volar plate fixation. The thickness of the FPL tendon and its distance to the volar plate in the involved wrists and to the volar rim in the contralateral uninjured wrist were measured on sonograms taken 12 months postoperatively. Measurements of the involved wrists were compared with thos ...Daha fazlası

Lipoma within inverted Meckel's diverticulum as a cause of recurrent partial intestinal obstruction and hemorrhage: A case report and review of literature

Cakmak, Guleniz Karadeniz | Emre, Ali Ugur | Tascilar, Oge | Bektas, Sibel | Ucan, Bulent Hamdi | Irkorucu, Oktay | Karakaya, Kemal

Lipoma within an inverted Meckel's diverticulum presenting with hemorrhage and partial intestinal obstruction is an exceptional clinical entity. We report a case of 47-year-old male with a history of recurrent episodes of partial intestinal obstruction and melena due to a subserosal lipoma located in the base of an inverted Meckel's diverticulum. According to our knowledge, this is the first case of a lipoma within a Meckel's diverticulum giving rise to this clinical scenario without the existence of heterotrophic gastric or pancreatic tissues. A Rare Complication of Spinal Surgery: Cerebelllar Hemorrhage

Gul, Sanser | Kalayci, Murat | Acikgoz, Bektas

Remote cerebellar hemorrhage (RCH) after spinal surgery is encountered extremely rarely. A 64 year-old female patient developed symptoms of deteriorating consciousness and diplopia arising on the first postoperative day after recurrent spinal surgery. Cranial CT scan showed cerebral edema and evidence of a cerebellar hemorrhage. Urgent suboccipital decompressive craniectomy and expanded duraplasty were performed. Repeat CT at 24 h revealed hydrocephalus and an external ventricular drain (EVD) was inserted for 20 days. The patient's consciousness deteriorated after withdrawal of the EVD and a v ...Daha fazlası

The Evaluation of Kurtbogazi Dam (Ankara, Turkey) from Hydro-Geochemical and Environmental Aspects

Altın, Ahmet | Bakır, Fatma | Özölçer, İsmail Hakkı

KurtbogazA +/- Dam is one of the most significant sources of drinking water sources for Ankara City. In this study, hydro-geochemical properties and pollution sources of surface waters feeding into the dam are determined. In addition, important environmental problems such as squatter's houses and wastewater discharges within protection zones of watershed of the dam are defined and appropriate precautions are discussed. The long-term trend (1998-2007) in water quality results of the dam and the surface waters in the KurtbogazA +/- watershed were studied, utilizing data provided by General Direc ...Daha fazlası

Destabilization and treatment of emulsified oils in wastewaters by electrocoagulation

Genç, Ayten | Bakırcı, Büşra

In this study, the optimum operating conditions for the treatment of emulsified oils by electrocoagulation were determined depending on droplet stability analysis. Zeta potential measurements were used as the indication of oil droplet charges. In addition, the effects of pH and ionic conductivity on the droplet sizes and surface charges were investigated. The studied emulsified oil droplet sizes were more sensitive to changes in pH rather than salt concentration. The droplets became larger and unstable in alkaline conditions. As the initial pH of wastewaters increased, the oil removal efficien ...Daha fazlası

Sorption of acid dyes from aqueous solution by using non-ground ash and slag

Genç, Ayten | Oğuz, Aşkın

The sorption of two acid dyes (Acid Yellow 99 and Acid Red 183) into locally available industrial waste materials, namely, Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS) and Furnace Bottom Ash (FBA), has been investigated by performing batch equilibrium experiments with pH, ionic conductivity, initial dye concentration and temperature as variables. The kinetic sorption data indicated that the sorption capacity of GBFS for these dyes was almost zero. On the other hand, the color removal efficiency for FBA could reach 50% depending on the initial dye concentration. It was also found that the kinetics of s ...Daha fazlası

Transport of Lead (Pb2+) Ions through silty-clayey soils under acidic conditions

Genç, Ayten | Ulupınar, Elif

This study aimed to identify effects of pH on the transport of Pb2+ ions through a saturated silty-clayey soil layer by using advection-dispersion equation (ADE). The predictive accuracy of the solution of ADE depends on the proper determination of the retardation by adsorption and, therefore, the adsorption mechanism of lead onto silty-clayey soil was investigated first by performing batch equilibrium experiments. These results showed that the sorption mechanism of lead onto silty-clayey soil depended on pH and could be best described by the Langmuir isotherm. Based on the results of the sequ ...Daha fazlası

Lead (II) removal from natural soils by enhanced electrokinetic remediation

Altın, Ahmet | Değirmenci, Mustafa

Electrokinetic remediation is a very effective method to remove metal from fine-grained soils having low adsorption and buffering capacity. However, remediation of soil having high alkali and adsorption capacity via the electrokinetic method is a very difficult process. Therefore, enhancement techniques are required for use in these soil types. In this study, the effect of the presence of minerals having high alkali and cation exchange capacity in natural soil polluted with lead (II) was investigated by means of the efficiency of electrokinetic remediation method. Natural soil samples containi ...Daha fazlası
