Angiomyolipoma is a benign tumoral lesion of the kidney which microscopically contains fat, smooth muscle and blood vessels, and may result in retroperitoneal hemorrhage. Lymphangiomyomatosis is a lesion that may lead to diffuse involvement of lungs and cause respiratory failure, spontaneous pneumothorax or pleural effusion. It is characterized by proliferation of a mixture of lymphatic and smooth muscle. Both lesions may be components of tuberous sclerosis, an uncommon syndrome. Our case is 41-year-old female presented with chest pain and dyspnea. Thin walled air cysts were determined in lung parenchyma by thorax tomography and images of enlarged kidneys and mass lesions including areas of adipose density were supplied by abdominal tomography. Right nephrectomy was performed because of intraabdominal hemorrhage. Infiltrative tumor microscopically composed of mature lipomatose, myomatose components and congested blood vessels, and reactive for HMB-45 [Melanoma (gp100) Ab-3 (clone HMB45+HMB50), Neomarkers] was diagnosed as angiomyolipoma. Microscopic evaluation of the lung lesions revealed cystic lymphatic containing smooth muscle cells. The tumor with presence of smooth muscle in the walls of lymphatic shown with trichrome and was diagnosed as lymphangiomyomatosis. The patient died because of irreversible cardiopulmonary arrest on the postoperative 16th day Daha fazlası Daha az

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the size and shape characteristics of prostatic adenocarcinoma cell nuclei using a computer-assisted analysis system, and to compare the results with the Gleason score. Materials and Methods: Morphometric nuclear parameters, such as roundness factor, form ellipse, area, length, and perimeter, were evaluated based on specimen slides of 130 prostatic adenocarcinoma cases (77% needle biopsies and 23% prostatectomy specimens) using a computerized image analysis system. Correlation analysis between Gleason score and morphometric results was performed. Results: The Gleason score was correlated with . . . mean nuclear area (r = 0.516, P = 0.01), mean nuclear length (r = 0.298, P = 0.01), and mean nuclear perimeter (r = 0.303, P = 0.01) for all specimens. In the needle biopsy group the Gleason score was correlated with mean nuclear area (r = 0.522, P = 0.01), mean nuclear length (r = 0.398, P = 0.01), and mean nuclear perimeter (r = 0.432, P = 0.01), whereas in the prostatectomy group the Gleason score was correlated only with mean nuclear area (? = 0.619, P = 0.01) and mean nuclear roundness factor (? = -0.425, P = 0.05). Conclusions: Nuclear size and shape factors, especially mean nuclear area, were concordant with the Gleason score. Nuclear size and shape assessment may aid in the evaluation of the pathological status of prostatic adenocarcinoma. © TÜBİTAK Daha fazlası Daha az

AIM: To investigate the effect of exogenous erythropoietin (EPO) administration on acute lung injury (ALI) in an experimental model of sodium taurodeoxycholate-induced acute necrotizing pancreatitis (ANP). METHODS: Forty-seven male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into 7 groups: sham group (n = 5), 3 ANP groups (n = 7 each) and 3 EPO groups (n = 7 each). ANP was induced by retrograde infusion of 5% sodium taurodeoxycholate into the common bile duct. Rats in EPO groups received 1000 U/kg intramuscular EPO immediately after induction of ANP Rats in ANP groups were given 1 mL normal saline instead. All animals were sacrificed a . . .t postoperative 24 h, 48 h and 72 h. Serum amilase, IL-2, IL-6 and lung tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured. Pleural effusion volume and lung/body weight (LW/BW) ratios were calculated. Tissue levels of TNF-alpha, IL-2 and IL-6 were screened immunohistochemically. Additionally, ox-LDL accumulation was assessed with immune-fluorescent staining. Histopathological alterations in the lungs were also scored. RESULTS: The mean pleural effusion volume, calculated LW/BW ratio, serum IL-6 and lung tissue MDA levels were significantly lower in EPO groups than in ANP groups. No statistically significant difference was observed in either serum or tissue values of IL-2 among the groups. The level of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and IL-6 and accumulation of ox-LDL were evident in the lung tissues of ANP groups when compared to EPO groups, particularly at 72 h. Histopathological evaluation confirmed the improvement in lung injury parameters after exogenous EPO administration, particularly, at 48 h and 72 h. CONCLUSION: EPO administration leads to a significant decrease in ALI parameters by inhibiting polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMNL) accumulation, decreasing the levels of proinflammatory cytokines in circulation, preserving microvascular endothelial cell integrity and reducing oxidative stress-associated lipid peroxidation and therefore, can be regarded as a cytoprotective agent in ANP-induced ALI. Renal dysplasia is a disorganized development of the kidney because anomalous differentiation of the metanephrosis. Abnormalities of the collecting system are common. They include obstruction of the ureteropelvic junction, ureteral atresia and urethral obstruction. The case was a six months old female child with ultrasonografically detected right hydronephrosis and oligohydroamniosis at the 20 th week of gestation. She underwent an operation for bilateral hydroureteronephrosis at 1 month of age. There was no serious and related illness in family history and self-history. She underwent right nephrectomy at 6 months of age. The specim . . .en included an atrophic nephrectomy material with lobulations and a dilated ureter. When sectioned, it was observed that the pericaliceal areas were dilated and the cortex-medulla border was obscured. On microscopic examination, the cortex was thin, contained rare small glomerules, primitive ducts and mononuclear cell infiltration were seen. A focus of cartilage was observed at the cortex-medulla junction. The case was diagnosed as renal hypoplastic dysplasia. During 4 months of follow-up, no complication was reported. This case is presented considering the uncommon occurence of renal dysplasia and its differential diagnosis from other congenital cystic renal malformations Daha fazlası Daha az

Intraoperative consultation is a high-risk procedure of pathology departments with important consequences. Therefore, it is critical to determine institutional efficiency of frozen section performance periodically. Frozen section diagnoses of 552 specimens from 401 cases between June 2001 and January 2005 were rewieved and correlated with subsequent histopathological examination, to assess concordant, discordant and deferred diagnoses as well as false negative and false positive rates and to determine reasons for discordance. Each individual specimen from the same case was considered and evaluated as one case. Excluding deferred dia . . .gnosis constituting 4.53% of the cases, accuracy, false negative and false positive rates were consecutively found 97.47%, 2.08%, and 0.57%. Interestingly, a great proportion of false negative cases were found to be associated with papillary carcinoma of thyroid. Gross sampling error and misinterpretation appeared as the leading reasons for frozen section discordance. Considering discordant frozen section diagnoses have a great impact on patient's care, intra and interinstitutional monitoring of frozen section performance may serve as a quality control programme Daha fazlası Daha az
