Background: Acute radiation proctitis is a common complication of pelvic radiation and management of acute radiation proctitis is under evaluation. The beneficial effects of ozonated olive oil (OzOO) have already been shown in the treatment of chronic wounds. Thus, this study was designed to evaluate the therapeutic effects of topical OzOO on acute radiation proctitis. Aims: To evaluate the therapeutic effects of topical OzOO on acute radiation proctitis. Study Design: Animal experimentation. Methods: Rats were divided into three groups: control; irradiation+saline (1 mL); and irradiation +OzOO (1 mL). A single fraction of 17.5 Gy w . . .as delivered to each rat. The OzOO was administered rectally each day after irradiation. Each rat was observed daily for signs of proctitis. Irradiated rats were euthanised on days 5 and 10. The mucosal changes were evaluated macroscopically and pathologically. Results: According to the clinical findings, five rats in the irradiation+saline group showed Grade 4 symptoms on the 10th day. Macroscopic finding scores on the 10th day in the irradiation+saline and irradiation+OzOO groups were statistically significantly different. On pathological examination, radiationinduced mucosal damage was the most prominent 10 days after irradiation in saline-treated rats. On the 10th day, the irradiation+OzOO group showed mild inflammation and slight crypt change, which corresponded to Grade 1 pathological findings. Conclusion: OzOO attenuates macroscopic and pathological findings of acute radiation proctitis in rats. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of tadalafil (TDF) and pentoxifylline (PTX) on hepatic apoptosis and the expressions of endothelial and inducible nitric oxide synthases (eNOS and iNOS) after liver ischemia/reperfusion (IR). Forty Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into five groups (n = 8) as follows: sham group; IR group with ischemia/reperfusion alone; low-dose and high-dose TDF groups received 2.5 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg TDF, respectively; and PTX group received 40 mg/kg PTX. Blood was collected for the analysis of serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, ?-glutamyl transferase, uric acid, . . .malondialdehyde (MDA), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). MDA and TAC also were measured in liver tissue. Histopathological examination was performed to assess the severity of hepatic injury. Apoptosis was evaluated using the apoptosis protease-activating factor 1 (APAF-1) antibody; the expressions of eNOS and iNOS were also assessed by immunohistochemistry in all groups. Serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, ?-glutamyl transferase, uric acid, MDA, and TAC, tissue MDA and TAC levels, hepatic injury, and score for extent and for intensity of eNOS, iNOS, and apoptosis protease-activating factor 1 were significantly different in TDF and PTX groups compared to the IR group. High dose-TDF and PTX have the best protective effect on IR-induced liver tissue damage. This study showed that TDF and PTX supplementation may be helpful in preventing free oxygen radical damage, lipid peroxidation, hepatocyte necrosis, and apoptosis in liver IR injury and minimizing liver damage. © 201 Daha fazlası Daha az

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the size and shape characteristics of prostatic adenocarcinoma cell nuclei using a computer-assisted analysis system, and to compare the results with the Gleason score. Materials and Methods: Morphometric nuclear parameters, such as roundness factor, form ellipse, area, length, and perimeter, were evaluated based on specimen slides of 130 prostatic adenocarcinoma cases (77% needle biopsies and 23% prostatectomy specimens) using a computerized image analysis system. Correlation analysis between Gleason score and morphometric results was performed. Results: The Gleason score was correlated with . . . mean nuclear area (r = 0.516, P = 0.01), mean nuclear length (r = 0.298, P = 0.01), and mean nuclear perimeter (r = 0.303, P = 0.01) for all specimens. In the needle biopsy group the Gleason score was correlated with mean nuclear area (r = 0.522, P = 0.01), mean nuclear length (r = 0.398, P = 0.01), and mean nuclear perimeter (r = 0.432, P = 0.01), whereas in the prostatectomy group the Gleason score was correlated only with mean nuclear area (? = 0.619, P = 0.01) and mean nuclear roundness factor (? = -0.425, P = 0.05). Conclusions: Nuclear size and shape factors, especially mean nuclear area, were concordant with the Gleason score. Nuclear size and shape assessment may aid in the evaluation of the pathological status of prostatic adenocarcinoma.

Serous carcinoma is the prototype of type II endometrial carcinoma. A 71-year-old woman who had history of smoking, diabetes mellitus and hypertension admitted to the hospital with postmenopausal uterine bleeding. Curettage material was diagnosed as adenocarcinoma. Hysterectomy specimen revealed a uterine polypoid mass which afterwards was histopathologically proven to be a serous carcinoma arising from an endometrial polyp. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells showed diffuse reaction for p53 and c-erbB-2, and focal reaction for estrogen and progesterone receptors. In addition to history of diabetes mellitus and hypertension, our case shared some clinical and immunohistochemical characteristics of type I endometrial carcinoma, such as focal expression of estrogen and progesterone receptors. Overexpressions of p53 and c-erbB-2 in this tumor type should be considered Daha fazlası Daha az

Objective: Bronchoalveolar lavage performed during bronchoscopic examination is a type of cytologic sampling with great diagnostic significance. Its diagnostic value is enhanced when biopsy is unavailable and bronchoalveolar lavage is the unique sample. Determining the diagnostic accuracy of bronchoalveolar lavage by comparing it with the diagnostic yield of synchronous biopsies is an indicator of its effectiveness. Material and Methods: In this study, 435 bronchoalveolar lavage and 273 bronchoscopic biopsy specimens obtained from January 2003 to December 2005 in the Department of Pulmonary Diseases were retrospectively evaluated in . . . the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, Zonguldak Karaelmas University. Results: Overall, 373 cases (85.8%) were diagnosed as benign and 12 cases (2.8%) were reported as malignant, while IS cases (4.1%) were suspected to be malignant; the remaining 32 cases (7.3%) were reported as inadequate. The numbers and percentages of benign, malignant, suspected malignant and inadequate diagnoses of the 273 bronchoalveolar lavage cases with synchronous transbronchial biopsies were 229 (83.9%), 12 (4.5%), 16 (5.8%), and 16 (5.8%), respectively. After suspected malignant and inadequate samples were excluded, coomparison of cytologic and histologic diagnoses revealed that the diagnostic accuracy of bronchoalveolar lavage cytology was 79.4% and 91.6% for benign and malignant diagnoses, respectively; the rate of false negativity was 20.5% and false positivity was 8.3%. Conclusion: While sampling errors seemed to be the primary reason for false negative and false positive diagnoses, the rate of false cytologic evaluation was lower. Considering the false negative diagnoses for cases without biopsy specimens, comparison of bronchoalveolar lavage diagnoses with synchronous biopsies may serve as a quality control programme, since this condition may significantly influence the clinical course Daha fazlası Daha az
