Introduction: Alcohol consumption is frequently associated with gastric mucosa! lesions. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Coenzyme-Q(10) (CoQ(10)) supplementation on the ethanol-induced gastric mucosal damage in a rat model. Material and method: Sixty-four female wistar albino rats were randomly divided into 8 groups (n = 8). Studies were performed in ethanol induced gastric ulcer model in Wistar albino rats. Famotidine at a dose of 5 mg/kg or 20 mg/kg and CoQ(10), at a single dose of 10 mg/kg or 20 mg/kg and 30 mg/kg for 7 days were administered as pretreatment. All the rats in study groups received 2 ml/kg . . .ethanol 95 % intragastrically, 30 minutes after pretreatment. Four hour after ethanol administration, all rats were sacrificed and their stomachs were removed under ketamin anaesthesia. Gastric protection was evaluated by measuring the ulcer index, MDA concentrations, and histopathological studies. Results and discussion: Rats pretreated either with famotidine or CoQ(10) had significantly diminished gastric mucosal damage which was assessed with gross and microscopic analysis (p < 0.00625). MDA levels were significantly lower in famotidine 20 mg/kg and CoQ(10), pretreatment for 7 days group (p < 0.00625). Conclusion: CoQ(10) affords gastroprotection against ethanol-induced gastric mucosal lesions in rats especially after repetitive administrations (Tab. 3, Fig. 2, Ref. 35). Oxidation of the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) results in the production of modified LDLs. Oxidation of LDL cholesterol plays a role on the pathogenesis of endothelial dysfunction. This study was designed to investigate the possible participation of the oxidative modification of low density lipoprotein in the lung edema induced by alpha-naphthylthiourea (ANTU), which is a well-known noxious chemical agent on the lung endothelium. When ANTU injected intraperitoneally into rats (15 mg kg(-1)), it produced lung edema as indicated by an increase in lung weight/body weight (LW/BW) ratio and pleural effusion (PE) reaching a maximum within . . . 4 h. A significant lung edema was observed 4 h after intraperitoneally injection of alpha-naphthylthiourea when compared with olive oil-injected control rats. On microscopic examination of alpha-naphthylthiourea-treated rats were shown to have severe lung injury, while no change was observed in olive oil-treated control rats. While there were no staining in control lungs, positive oxidized low-density lipoproteins immune-fluorescent staining were observed in lung edema group. Our study showed that oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) accumulated in ANTU-induced lung damage. This is the first study in which accumulation of oxLDL molecules in the intact lung tissue were shown by fluorescent immune-staining method in experimental lung edema. The potential role of oxLDL in this pathology are still under investigation. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved Daha fazlası Daha az

Serous carcinoma is the prototype of type II endometrial carcinoma. A 71-year-old woman who had history of smoking, diabetes mellitus and hypertension admitted to the hospital with postmenopausal uterine bleeding. Curettage material was diagnosed as adenocarcinoma. Hysterectomy specimen revealed a uterine polypoid mass which afterwards was histopathologically proven to be a serous carcinoma arising from an endometrial polyp. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells showed diffuse reaction for p53 and c-erbB-2, and focal reaction for estrogen and progesterone receptors. In addition to history of diabetes mellitus and hypertension, our case shared some clinical and immunohistochemical characteristics of type I endometrial carcinoma, such as focal expression of estrogen and progesterone receptors. Overexpressions of p53 and c-erbB-2 in this tumor type should be considered Daha fazlası Daha az

Objective: Traumatic neuroma is an exuberant, probably nonneoplastic proliferation of a nerve occurring in response to injury or surgery. We studied six cases of traumatic neuroma with light microscopic, histochemical and immunohistochemical methods to assess the cellular compositions of these lesions. Material and Methods: Sections from the formalin-fixed parafin-embedded tissues were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, Gomori's trichrome, Verhoeff elastica-von Gieson, reticuline, and S-100 protein, Epithelial Membrane Antigen, CD34 and CD68. Results: All cases revealed large numbers of small and haphazardly arranged regenerating nerve . . . fascicles within a densely collagenous and fibroblastic stroma. A focal chronic mononuclear cell inflammatory reaction was observed in three cases. In all cases, Gomori's trichrome revealed collagen. Axonal morphology was detected in nerve fibers histochemically by reticulin. In all cases, fascicles were stained diffusely with S-100 protein, and Epithelial Membrane Antigen showed a positive reaction in a thin band of cells surrounding the fascicles in three of the cases. CD34 positive cells were present in five cases. CD68 expressing cells were present in only in two specimens. Conclusion: In traumatic neuromas, specific staining of fascicles with S-100 protein, perineural cells reactive for Epithelial Membrane Antigen and the presence of CD34 positive cells may contribute to our understanding of their pathogenesis and differentiation of these lesions from mimickers Daha fazlası Daha az

Objective: Bronchoalveolar lavage performed during bronchoscopic examination is a type of cytologic sampling with great diagnostic significance. Its diagnostic value is enhanced when biopsy is unavailable and bronchoalveolar lavage is the unique sample. Determining the diagnostic accuracy of bronchoalveolar lavage by comparing it with the diagnostic yield of synchronous biopsies is an indicator of its effectiveness. Material and Methods: In this study, 435 bronchoalveolar lavage and 273 bronchoscopic biopsy specimens obtained from January 2003 to December 2005 in the Department of Pulmonary Diseases were retrospectively evaluated in . . . the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, Zonguldak Karaelmas University. Results: Overall, 373 cases (85.8%) were diagnosed as benign and 12 cases (2.8%) were reported as malignant, while IS cases (4.1%) were suspected to be malignant; the remaining 32 cases (7.3%) were reported as inadequate. The numbers and percentages of benign, malignant, suspected malignant and inadequate diagnoses of the 273 bronchoalveolar lavage cases with synchronous transbronchial biopsies were 229 (83.9%), 12 (4.5%), 16 (5.8%), and 16 (5.8%), respectively. After suspected malignant and inadequate samples were excluded, coomparison of cytologic and histologic diagnoses revealed that the diagnostic accuracy of bronchoalveolar lavage cytology was 79.4% and 91.6% for benign and malignant diagnoses, respectively; the rate of false negativity was 20.5% and false positivity was 8.3%. Conclusion: While sampling errors seemed to be the primary reason for false negative and false positive diagnoses, the rate of false cytologic evaluation was lower. Considering the false negative diagnoses for cases without biopsy specimens, comparison of bronchoalveolar lavage diagnoses with synchronous biopsies may serve as a quality control programme, since this condition may significantly influence the clinical course Daha fazlası Daha az

Lymphomatoid granulomatosis is a rare, diffuse, large B-cell lymphoma that is positive for Epstein-Barr virus. A multiorgan process, it manifests itself chiefly in the lungs but can also affect the skin, nervous system, and kidneys. Cardiac involvement and pericardial effusion are very unusual. We report the case of a 62-year-old man with lymphomatoid granulomatosis involving the heart and lungs. Diagnosis was confirmed with wedge biopsy at pericardiotomy, and the patient was treated with cyclophosphamide, prednisolone, and vincristine. Although the patient was still symptomatic at 6-month follow-up, he was in partial remission with . . . improved functional capacity. (Tex Heart last J 2012;39(1):116-8 Daha fazlası Daha az
