Effects of ozonated olive oil on acute radiation proctitis in rats

Background: Acute radiation proctitis is a common complication of pelvic radiation and management of acute radiation proctitis is under evaluation. The beneficial effects of ozonated olive oil (OzOO) have already been shown in the treatment of chronic wounds. Thus, this study was designed to evaluate the therapeutic effects of topical OzOO on acute radiation proctitis. Aims: To evaluate the therapeutic effects of topical OzOO on acute radiation proctitis. Study Design: Animal experimentation. Methods: Rats were divided into three groups: control; irradiation+saline (1 mL); and irradiation +OzOO (1 mL). A single fraction of 17.5 Gy w . . .as delivered to each rat. The OzOO was administered rectally each day after irradiation. Each rat was observed daily for signs of proctitis. Irradiated rats were euthanised on days 5 and 10. The mucosal changes were evaluated macroscopically and pathologically. Results: According to the clinical findings, five rats in the irradiation+saline group showed Grade 4 symptoms on the 10th day. Macroscopic finding scores on the 10th day in the irradiation+saline and irradiation+OzOO groups were statistically significantly different. On pathological examination, radiationinduced mucosal damage was the most prominent 10 days after irradiation in saline-treated rats. On the 10th day, the irradiation+OzOO group showed mild inflammation and slight crypt change, which corresponded to Grade 1 pathological findings. Conclusion: OzOO attenuates macroscopic and pathological findings of acute radiation proctitis in rats. Chemotherapy in elderly patients with metastatic gastric cancer; a single Turkish cancer center experience

Aim To analyze the results of chemotherapy applied at the Bülent Ecevit University School of Medicine, Department of Medical Oncology, to elderly patients with metastatic gastric cancer (GC). Methods The study retrospectively investigated hospital records including pathological reports, imaging records, chemotherapy regimens, response and toxicity profile. All patients received systemic chemotherapy for pathologically proven metastatic GC at the Bülent Ecevit University School of Medicine, Department of Medical Oncology. Results From 2005 to 2012, 23 metastatic GC patients older than 70 years were treated with systemic chemotherapy . . .as a first-line therapy. As the first-line chemotherapy, 17 (74%) patients received polychemotherapy and the remaining six (26%) patients received monotherapy. Overall, 113 cycles were administered. The median progression free survival (PFS) for the first-line chemotherapy was 6 months (95% CI, 0-16) and the median overall survival (OS) was 14 months (95% CI, 3-30). Multivariate analysis revealed that decreased OS was significantly associated with poor Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status (p=0.045), elevated carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels at the diagnosis time (p = 0.040) and decreased number of chemotherapy cycles (p=0.019) with R-Sq (adj) = 41, 6%. One patient had a complete response with docetaxel, cisplatin and fluorouracil combined (DCF) regimen and had 12 months of disease free survival (DFS). Conclusion This is the first study investigating the outcomes of chemotherapy in Turkish elderly metastatic GC patients. Protection by L-carnitine against radiation-induced ileal mucosal injury in the rat: Pattern of oxidative stress, apoptosis and cytokines

Purpose: In this study, we tested the effects of L-carnitine (LC) on radiation-induced ileal mucosal damage. Materials and methods: Thirty Wistar albino rats were divided into five groups. The control group received physiological saline intraperitoneally (i.p.). Radiation-1 and radiation-2 groups received whole-body X-irradiation of 8.3 Gy as a single dose. These groups were sacrificed at the 6th hour and 4th day after irradiation, respectively. The Radiation-1 + LC and the radiation-2 + LC groups received the same dose irradiation plus a daily dose of 200 mg/kg LC. LC was applied one day before and for four days after irradiation. . . .Results: The levels of serum monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) and interferon gamma (IFN-?) were significantly higher in the radiation groups when compared with the control. Treatment with LC decreased the serum MCP-1 and IFN-? levels considerably. In the radiations groups, the Chiu score was significantly elevated compared with that of the control group. However, LC administered prior to the irradiation reduced the severity of mucosal damage. The number of apoptotic cells of the ileal crypt in the irradiated rats increased from the 6th hour after irradiation and then decreased at 4th day. Effect of ozone oxidative preconditioning in preventing early radiation-induced lung injury in rats

Ionizing radiation causes its biological effects mainly through oxidative damage induced by reactive oxygen species. Previous studies showed that ozone oxidative preconditioning attenuated pathophysiological events mediated by reactive oxygen species. As inhalation of ozone induces lung injury, the aim of this study was to examine whether ozone oxidative preconditioning potentiates or attenuates the effects of irradiation on the lung. Rats were subjected to total body irradiation, with or without treatment with ozone oxidative preconditioning (0.72 mg/kg). Serum proinflammatory cytokine levels, oxidative damage markers, and histopat . . .hological analysis were compared at 6 and 72 h after total body irradiation. Irradiation significantly increased lung malondialdehyde levels as an end-product of lipoperoxidation. Irradiation also significantly decreased lung superoxide dismutase activity, which is an indicator of the generation of oxidative stress and an early protective response to oxidative damage. Ozone oxidative preconditioning plus irradiation significantly decreased malondialdehyde levels and increased the activity of superoxide dismutase, which might indicate protection of the lung from radiation-induced lung injury. Serum tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin-1 beta levels, which increased significantly following total body irradiation, were decreased with ozone oxidative preconditioning. Moreover, ozone oxidative preconditioning was able to ameliorate radiation-induced lung injury assessed by histopathological evaluation. Superior vena cava anomalies are rare malformations that are typically seen with other congenital cardiac defects. Although a persistent left superior vena cava is the most common anomaly of the systemic venous return in the thorax, its combination with an upper sinus venosus defect and absence of the innominate vein is extremely rare. Here, we report a patient diagnosed with these anomalies based on a bubble study and confirmed with magnetic resonance imaging.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, also known as broken heart syndrome, is similar to acute coronary syndrome. The absence of significant stenosis on coronary angiography and spontaneous improvement of ventricular akinesia are very important features that distinguish this syndrome from acute coronary syndromes. Despite the fact that ST segment elevations are typically encountered, atypical presentation without ECG changes should be kept in mind. We herein report the case of a 61-year-old woman who presented with mid-apical left ventricular akinesia resolving within 24 h.

A new type of amphiphilic antibacterial elastomer has been described. Thermoplastic elastomer, polystyrene-block-polyisoprene-block-polystyrene (PS-b-PI-b-PS) triblock copolymer was functionalized in toluene solution by free radical mercaptan addition in order to obtain an amphiphilic antibacterial elastomer. Thiol terminated PEG was grafted through the double bonds of PS-b-PI-b-PS via free radical thiol-ene coupling reaction. The antibacterial properties of the amphiphilic graft copolymers were observed. The original and the modified polymers were used to create microfibers in an electro-spinning process. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of the new generation beta-blocker anti-hypertensive drugs carvedilol and nebivolol on aortic elastic properties which are important indicators of hypertension-related morbidity and mortality. A total of 50 patients who had been diagnosed with stage 1 hypertension according to the Joint National Committee (JNC) VII criteria and who had not received any anti-hypertensive treatment were enrolled in this study. Patients were randomized to receive either 25 mg/day carvedilol (n = 25) or 5 mg/day nebivolol (n = 25) for 3 months at the beginning of the study. Three patients (1 in the carved . . .ilol group, 2 in the nebivolol group) who did not attend 3 month follow-up measurements were excluded from the study. The study was completed with 47 patients (25 women; mean age: 49 +/- 9 years). The aortic elastic parameters such as aortic strain (AS), aortic distensibility (AD), and aortic stiffness index (ASI) were measured by echocardiography. Carvedilol and nebivolol provided a similar decline in both systolic and diastolic blood pressures (-12/-7 mmHg, p < 0.0001 and -12/-7 mmHg, p = 0.002, respectively). Both carvedilol and nebivolol induced a significant decrease in heart rate (-aEuro parts per thousand 15 bpm, p < 0.0001, -aEuro parts per thousand 17 bpm, p < 0.0001, respectively). Even though the heart rate at the end of the treatment was lower for the nebivolol group, the rate of decrease of heart rates between carvedilol and nebivolol groups was not statistically significant (p = 0.074). Both groups demonstrated improvements in the diastolic functions of the left ventricle where certain values showed more improvement for the nebivolol group. Both groups showed improvements in AS and AD rates compared to basal rates; however, these improvements were not statistically significant. Although the improvement rates in AS, AD, and ASI were higher in the nebivolol group compared to the carvedilol group, the differences were not statistically significant (p = 0.091, p = 0.095, p = 0.259, respectively). Both carvedilol and nebivolol induced a decrease in blood pressure and heart rate and showed an improvement in left ventricular diastolic functions. It was observed that both drugs did not cause deterioration in the aortic elastic properties but a slight improvement was seen. However, this improvement was not statistically significant. The improvement was more explicit in the nebivolol group. It may be concluded that nebivolol is slightly superior to carvedilol in reducing heart rate and improving left ventricular diastolic functions. Inducible nitric oxide synthase expression in gastric adenocarcinoma: Impact on lymphangiogenesis and lymphatic metastasis

Background: Lymphatic metastasis is the most important parameter in the spread of gastric carcinomas. Nitric oxide (NO) is a signaling molecule that plays an important role in inflammation and carcinogenesis. In this study, the possible link between inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression with lymphangiogenesis and the clinicopathological parameters of gastric carcinomas was investigated.Methods: In this study, iNOS expression and D2-40 (lymphatic endothelium-specific marker monoclonal antibody) reactivity were examined immunohistochemically in 41 gastric adenocarcinoma and 20 non-neoplastic gastric tissues. iNOS expressio . . .n was scored semiquantitatively in the tumor parenchyma and stroma. D2-40-positive lymphatic vessels were used in the determination of lymphatic invasion and intratumoral and peritumoral lymphatic vascular density.Results: iNOS expression was higher in gastric carcinoma tissue compared with non-neoplastic tissue. Particularly, iNOS expression in tumor cells was found to be closely related to lymphangiogenesis and lymphatic metastasis. The density of lymphatic invasion as well as intratumoral and peritumoral lymphatic vascular density were positively correlated with lymph node metastasis.Conclusions: Our results suggest that iNOS-mediated NO formation plays an important role in gastric carcinogenesis, tumor lymphangiogenesis, and the development of lymphatic metastases. Inhibition of the NO pathway may be an alternative treatment of gastric carcinomas.
