Comparison of the efficacy of tigecycline and teicoplanin in an experimental methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus osteomyelitis model

Kandemir, O. | Oztuna, V. | Colak, M. | Akdag, A. | Camdeviren, H.

Article | 2008 | JOURNAL OF CHEMOTHERAPY20 ( 1 ) , pp.53 - 57

We evaluated the efficacy of tigecycline and teicoplanin in a rat model of MRSA osteomyelitis. Osteomyelitis was induced with an intramedullary injection of 10(8) colony-forming units (cfu) of MRSA. After osteomyelitis formation was confirmed on Day 14, infected rats were randomly divided into three groups: tigecycline (n=13), teicoplanin (n=13), and no-treatment control (n=14). A 28-day antibiotic therapy with a subcutaneous injection of tigecycline (14 mg/kg twice daily) or intramuscular administration of teicoplanin (20 mg/kg daily) was administered. Rats were then sacrificed, and the tibias were harvested. The bones were weighed . . . and then cultured. Our results indicated that bacterial growth was significantly reduced in teicoplanin and tigecycline groups, compared to the control group (p=0.019 and p=0.006, respectively). However, no difference was detected between the two antibiotic groups (p=1.000). No bacterial growth was detected in 7 out of 13 and 9 out of 13 specimens of the teicoplanin and tigecycline treated groups, respectively. Although this result was numerically in favor of tigecycline, the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.427). In conclusion, tigecycline, a novel antibiotic, appears as an effective alternative to teicoplanin in the treatment of osteomyelitis caused by MRSA Daha fazlası Daha az

Pilonidal sinus disease can be treated with crystallized phenol using a simple three-step technique

Yuksel, Mehmet Eren

Article | 2017 | ACTA DERMATOVENEROLOGICA ALPINA PANNONICA ET ADRIATICA26 ( 1 ) , pp.15 - 17

Introduction: Pilonidal sinus disease can be treated with various surgical techniques. However, invasive surgical techniques harbor the risk of wound infection and require a long postoperative wound healing period. The treatment of pilonidal sinus disease with crystallized phenol is minimally invasive with a short postoperative recovery period. This article explains how to treat pilonidal sinus disease with crystallized phenol using a quick and easy three-step technique. Methods: Between August 2014 and January 2016, 43 male and 7 female patients with pilonidal sinus disease were treated with crystallized phenol. Hair was gently rem . . .oved from the sinus openings with a mosquito clamp. Afterwards, the pilonidal sinus openings were gently filled with crystallized phenol. Results: The closure of pilonidal sinus openings without any leakage after a single application of crystallized phenol was accepted as healing. The treatment failed in two of the female patients, who had had prior pilonidal sinus surgery, and in four of the male patients, who had a recurrence after wound site infection. The overall cure rate was 88%. Conclusion: Treatment of pilonidal sinus disease with crystallized phenol using the three-step technique is simple, fast, and comfortable. Therefore, crystallized phenol should be preferentially considered in the treatment of pilonidal sinus disease Daha fazlası Daha az

Diffuse and psammomatous calcification in intestinal type gastric carcinoma: Report of two cases with literature review

Erdogan, Nilsen Yildirim | Huten, Osman Nuri | Bahadir, Fadime | Sander, Ersan

Article | 2011 | TURKISH JOURNAL OF GASTROENTEROLOGY22 ( 4 ) , pp.414 - 418

Psammoma bodies are round, concentrically laminated calcospherites ranging from 5 to 100 pm in diameter. They may indicate certain types of tumors including papillary carcinoma of the thyroid, meningioma and papillary serous tumors of the ovary, and to a lesser extent may be found in leiomyomas and angiomas of the gastrointestinal tract. Dystrophic calcification is uncommon in gastric cancer and displays either diffuse or psammomatous pattern. Diffuse type calcification is generally seen within the pools of mucin in advanced mucinous adenocarcinoma. Conversely, psammomatous calcification is associated with non-mucin- producing carci . . .nomas and detected not only within the carcinomatous glandular lumina but also in the stroma. Total gastrectomy specimens of a 74-year-old male and a 54-year-old female with moderately differentiated intestinal type adenocarcinomas revealed diffuse and psammomatous calcification, respectively. Although diffuse type calcification is well-documented, to date it has not been reported in non-mucin-producing intestinal gastric carcinoma. Moreover, the psammomatous type is exceptionally rare, and only six such cases have been reported in the literature; the current patient represents the seventh case Daha fazlası Daha az

Effects of the folk medicinal plant extract Ankaferd Blood Stopper (R) on the ocular surface

Alpay, Atilla | Evren, Cenk | Bektas, Sibel | Ugurbas, Silay Canturk | Ugurbas, Suat Hayri | Cinar, Fikret

Article | 2011 | CUTANEOUS AND OCULAR TOXICOLOGY30 ( 4 ) , pp.280 - 285

Purpose: To investigate the effects of Ankaferd Blood Stopper (R) (ABS) on the ocular surface. Methods: Twenty adult male Wistar albino rats, weighing 390-530 g, were used in this prospective, controlled trial. One drop of ABS and one drop of balanced salt solution (BSS) were instilled into the lower conjunctival sac of the right and left eyes, respectively. After the rats were anesthetized, the ocular surface was evaluated based on the Draize criteria, and fluorescein tests were performed at 1, 2, 4, 18, 24, and 48 h. Subsequently, the rats were killed and all eyes were enucleated for histopathological examination. Results: The out . . .come of the Draize and fluorescein tests revealed that ABS caused more irritation of the ocular surface than BSS (P < 0.001). The highest mean ABS score was 4.9 for the Draize test and 0.4 for the fluorescein test, and ABS was considered to be a slight irritant. Histopathological examinations of the cornea and the conjunctiva revealed no significant difference between the eyes instilled with BSS and those instilled with ABS. Conclusions: ABS is a hemostatic drug that exerts a slight toxic effect on the ocular surface. Given its ease of use and antibacterial activity, as well as its efficiency in stopping bleeding, the use of ABS during ocular surgery should be further investigated in experimental and clinical studies Daha fazlası Daha az

Radiologic aspects of abdominal hydatidosis in children - A study of 31 cases in Turkey

Erdem, LO | Erdem, CZ | Karlioguz, K | Uner, C

Article | 2004 | CLINICAL IMAGING28 ( 3 ) , pp.196 - 200

Objective: To determine the location and radiological characteristics in children with abdominal hydatid disease (HD). Materials and methods: Thirty-one children (average age: 7.2 years) with abdominal HD were studied. The number, location, diameter and internal architecture of the cysts were assessed with abdominal ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT). Density measurements and enhancement patterns were determined on CT. Results: Twenty-one children had hepatic HD. The remaining 10 children had both hepatic and extrahepatic cysts. There were splenic cysts in five children, peritoneal cysts in two children and combined s . . .plenic and peritoneal cysts in three children. The most common site of the cysts was the liver (64%), followed by the spleen (20%) and the peritoneal cavity (16%). The seven intraabdominal cysts, which were not detected by US, were 20 min or less in diameter. Conclusion: CT may demonstrate additional small intrahepatic or unsuspected extrahepatic cysts. Although rare, splenic or peritoneal hydatidosis should be included in the differential diagnosis of a cystic splenic or peritoneal lesion. Familiarity with atypical locations of HD may be helpful in making a prompt, accurate diagnosis. We think that in particular patients, especially those who had diagnostic problem and who are under surgical planning, CT should be performed additionally. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. Turan, Oguzhan Ekrem | Ozturk, Mustafa | Ilter, Abdulselam | Inc, Mustafa | Karaman, Kayihan | Kiris, Gulhanim | Kutlu, Merih

Article | 2015 | INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CLINICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL MEDICINE8 ( 3 ) , pp.4045 - 4051

Objective: To measure the Tp-e value, which shows the spatial distribution of cardiac repolarization and is defined as a possible predictor for ventricular arrhythmia among patients with aortic sclerosis (AS), and to compare this parameter's length to QTc length within the same population. Method: 60 patients that have been diagnosed with AS have been prospectively included in this study. Results: 60 AS and 64 control patients were evaluated as part of the study. The median age, prevalence for hypertension and diabetes, baseline medications and laboratory results of the groups were similar. The Electrocardiographic QT length of both . . . groups were found similar. In the AS group Tp-e tangent and Tp-e tail values were more longer than control group (P < 0.001). Tp-e tangent index and Tp-e tail index values were also statistically higher among AS patients when compared to the control group. (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Our study showed that Tp-e durations had increased in AS patients with no structural coronary heart disease. AS causes local degeneration on the aortic root and also has a negative effect on the total cardiac spatial repolarization Daha fazlası Daha az

Article | 2016 | EUROPEAN REVIEW FOR MEDICAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL SCIENCES20 ( 16 ) , pp.3434 - 3439

OBJECTIVE: Coronary angiography has a limitation to determine the severity of intermediate stenosis (30-70%)(1,2). Fractional flow reserve (FFR) is a method for the assessment of the intermediate stenosis severity(3). The effect of coronary artery disease (CAD) severity on the FFR results is not clear. In this study, we aimed to expose the effect of CAD severity calculated with Syntax and Gensini scores on FFR results. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We scanned patients data (n= 378) who had undergone fractional flow reserve measurements in our center. Patients with acute coronary syndrome in the last month, moderate or severe valvular diseas . . .es, acute heart failure, serious bradycardia, atrial fibrillation/flutter, severe left ventricular hypertrophy or patient with deficient data were excluded. 351 patients were included in the study. Syntax and Gensini scores were calculated and compared with FFR results. Hemodynamically significant result for FFR, ratio 22 had notable more crucial lesions in FFR measurements ( Daha fazlası Daha az

Impacts of land use conversion on soil properties and soil erodibility

Korkanc, Selma Yasar | Ozyuvaci, Necdet | Hizal, Ahmet

Article | 2008 | JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL BIOLOGY29 ( 3 ) , pp.363 - 370

Land use conversion can affect natural ecological processes such as surface runoff and erosion. Therefore, it has potential to change soil stability. To investigate this process in depth, Iskalan creek catchment in the Black sea region, where excessive land use applications and erosion events have often occured, was selected as the study area. The objective was to determine the effects of land use conversion on soil properties, soil erodibility and the relationships among soil properties and some erodibility indices. Duplicate topsoil samples were taken by using steel cylinders at 100 different sampling points from three different l . . .and use types; 34 of them are in farmlands, 34 in rangelands and 32 in forestlands. Soil particle size distribution, loss of ignition, pH, electrical conductivity, skeleton percentage and three erodibility indices were determined. Data were analysed by using Pearson correlation analysis (at 95% and 99% significance level), ANOVA and Tukey's test at 95 % significance level. According to study results, land use conversion affects some properties of soils significantly. Loss of ignition of soils in forests was significantly higher than soils in farmlands and rangelands. Soil skeleton percentage in rangelands and farmlands were significantly different. The study results showed that there was significant difference between pH of soils in forests and farmlands ( Daha fazlası Daha az

A severely mental and motor retarded hoe with monosomy 9pter -> p22, trisomy 10q26 -> qter due to paternal reciprocal translocation 46,xy,t(9;10)(p23;q26): We report on a twenty-two months old male patient with hypotonia, mental and motor retardation and trigonocephaly. Standard GTG banding chromosomal analysis (from metaphyses of a periferal blood lymphocyte culture) showed 46,XY, der(9) monosomy 9pter -> p22, trisomy 10q26 -> qter karyotype. This unbalanced translocation resulted from the father's (9,10) (p22;p26) karyotype. Deletions of the terminal part of 9p and partial trisomy of chromosome 10q are rare chromosomal disorders. . . .To our knowledge, this is the first case report in the literature of a deletion of 9pter -> p22.3 and a duplication of 10q26 -> qter. We assume that the clinical anomalies are due to der(9) monosomy 9pter -> p22, trisomy 10q-26qter Daha fazlası Daha az

Gurkanlar, D. | Yucel, E. | Er, U. | Keskil, S.

Article | 2006 | MINIMALLY INVASIVE NEUROSURGERY49 ( 3 ) , pp.179 - 183

The spontaneous regression of cervical disc herniations is a rare occurrence. Six herniated cervical discs that had regressed spontaneously are presented. All radiological disc regressions correlated well with clinical improvements. We want to underscore the potential for regression that should be considered in the evaluation and management of any patient with a herniated cervical disc.
