Objective: Fine needle aspiration cytology is the first step in the diagnosing breast lesions. This study evaluated factors causing false-negative and false-positive diagnoses when evaluating breast lesions using this technique. Background and Aim: Oxidized low-density lipoproteins (LDL), which are produced during oxidative stress by the process of lipid peroxidation, have also been proposed to have complex roles in many other immuno-inflammatory mechanisms. It has been shown that bile-duct ligation results in oxidative stress in the liver of animals. The aim of this study was to investigate if oxidized LDL are produced in the liver tissues of bile-duct-ligated mice. Methods: Obstructive jaundice was induced in BALB/c mice by the ligation and division of the common bile duct. Liver concentrations of glutathione and malondialdehyde were measured in the sham- . . .operated (n = 10) and bile-duct-ligated (n = 10) mice on the 10th day of obstructive jaundice. The presence of oxidized LDL in the liver tissue sections was evaluated using a special, novel immunofluorescent staining method. The final step was to explore the existence of oxidized LDL under fluorescent microscopy. Results: Compared with sham-operated mice, jaundiced mice showed significantly higher levels of malondialdehyde and lower concentrations of reduced glutathione in the liver. While there was no staining in the sham-operated group, bile-duct ligation resulted in positive oxidized LDL staining in the liver tissues of mice. The present study testifies that bile-duct ligation results in oxidative stress and enhanced lipid peroxidation in the hepatic tissues of BALB/c mice and moreover, that oxidized LDL accumulate in the liver of mice with experimental obstructive jaundice. Conclusion: Oxidized LDL may be an important and direct indicator of ongoing oxidative stress and enhanced lipid peroxidation in obstructive jaundice. Malignant solitary cylindroma of the scalp

Cylindroma is a rare tumor which originates from skin appendages and occurs predominantly on the scalp and face. It is considered to be benign, but malignant transformation has been reported. It has two distinct clinical presentations, solitary and multiple. A review of the literature revealed that the majority of malignant cylindromas occur among multiple type cylindromas. Only 36 malignant cylindromas have been reported, and only 9 were of the solitary type. A case with a solitary type of cylindroma exhibiting malignant transformation of the scalp is presented. © Springer-Verlag 2004.

The evidence that PITX1 (pituitary homeobox 1) is a significant tumor suppressor in human cancer remains largely circumstantial, but it clearly warrants further study as little is known about the tumor-inhibitory roles of PITX1 in cutaneous malignant melanoma. The aims of this study were to investigate PITX1 gene expression in patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma and to evaluate its potential relevance to clinicopathological characteristics and tumor cell proliferation. The relationship between PITX1 expression intensity and clinicopathological characteristics was also analyzed. PITX1 expression was observed in all (100%) normal healthy skin tissue samples. In addition, PITX1 expression was found in 56 (80%) and was absent in 14 (20%) of the 70 cutaneous malignant melanoma cases. Ki-67 positive expression was only detected in the 14 (20%) PITX1-negative cases. PITX1-positive tumor cells were observed on the surface, but Ki-67 positive tumor cells were observed in deeper zones of the tumor nests. PITX1 expression was downregulated in human cutaneous malignant melanoma lesions compared with healthy skin tissue, but Ki-67 expression was upregulated in concordance with the progression of cutaneous malignant melanoma. Oxidation of the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) results in the production of modified LDLs. Oxidation of LDL cholesterol plays a role on the pathogenesis of endothelial dysfunction. This study was designed to investigate the possible participation of the oxidative modification of low density lipoprotein in the lung edema induced by alpha-naphthylthiourea (ANTU), which is a well-known noxious chemical agent on the lung endothelium. When ANTU injected intraperitoneally into rats (15 mg kg(-1)), it produced lung edema as indicated by an increase in lung weight/body weight (LW/BW) ratio and pleural effusion (PE) reaching a maximum within . . . 4 h. A significant lung edema was observed 4 h after intraperitoneally injection of alpha-naphthylthiourea when compared with olive oil-injected control rats. On microscopic examination of alpha-naphthylthiourea-treated rats were shown to have severe lung injury, while no change was observed in olive oil-treated control rats. While there were no staining in control lungs, positive oxidized low-density lipoproteins immune-fluorescent staining were observed in lung edema group. Our study showed that oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) accumulated in ANTU-induced lung damage. This is the first study in which accumulation of oxLDL molecules in the intact lung tissue were shown by fluorescent immune-staining method in experimental lung edema. Gastroprotective effects of CoQ10 on ethanol-induced acute gastric lesions

Introduction: Alcohol consumption is frequently associated with gastric mucosal lesions. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Coenzyme-Q10 (CoQ10) supplementation on the ethanol-induced gastric mucosal damage in a rat model. Material and method: Sixty-four female wistar albino rats were randomly divided into 8 groups (n = 8). Studies were performed in ethanol induced gastric ulcer model in Wistar albino rats. Famotidine at a dose of 5 mg/kg or 20 mg/kg and CoQ10 at a single dose of 10 mg/kg or 20 mg/kg and 30 mg/kg for 7 days were administered as pretreatment. All the rats in study groups received 2 ml/kg ethanol . . . 95 % intragastrically, 30 minutes after pretreatment. Four hour after ethanol administration, all rats were sacrifi ced and their stomachs were removed under ketamin anaesthesia. Gastric protection was evaluated by measuring the ulcer index, MDA concentrations, and histopathological studies. Results and discussion: Rats pretreated either with famotidine or CoQ10 had signifi cantly diminished gastric mucosal damage which was assessed with gross and microscopic analysis (p < 0.00625). MDA levels were signifi cantly lower in famotidine 20 mg/kg and CoQ10 pretreatment for 7 days group (p < 0.00625). The mucocele of the appendix is an uncommon disorder which is often asymptomatic but sometimes causes acute appendicitis-like symptoms. Sometimes, patients with mucocele can present with confusing symptoms. Preoperative suspicion and diagnosis of appendiceal mucocele are important. Ultrasonography and camputed tomography are useful tools for the diagnosis of appendiceal mucocele. It may be also recognised by colonoscopy as a smooth submucosal lesion of the cecum. Background: Lymphatic metastasis is the most important parameter in the spread of gastric carcinomas. Nitric oxide (NO) is a signaling molecule that plays an important role in inflammation and carcinogenesis. In this study, the possible link between inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression with lymphangiogenesis and the clinicopathological parameters of gastric carcinomas was investigated.Methods: In this study, iNOS expression and D2-40 (lymphatic endothelium-specific marker monoclonal antibody) reactivity were examined immunohistochemically in 41 gastric adenocarcinoma and 20 non-neoplastic gastric tissues. iNOS expressio . . .n was scored semiquantitatively in the tumor parenchyma and stroma. D2-40-positive lymphatic vessels were used in the determination of lymphatic invasion and intratumoral and peritumoral lymphatic vascular density.Results: iNOS expression was higher in gastric carcinoma tissue compared with non-neoplastic tissue. Particularly, iNOS expression in tumor cells was found to be closely related to lymphangiogenesis and lymphatic metastasis. The density of lymphatic invasion as well as intratumoral and peritumoral lymphatic vascular density were positively correlated with lymph node metastasis.Conclusions: Our results suggest that iNOS-mediated NO formation plays an important role in gastric carcinogenesis, tumor lymphangiogenesis, and the development of lymphatic metastases. Inhibition of the NO pathway may be an alternative treatment of gastric carcinomas.
