A new species of voles, Microtus elbeyli sp nov., from Turkey with taxonomic overview of social voles distributed in southeastern Anatolia

There are twelve Microtus species in Turkey and two of them are endemic to the steppic central Anatolian plateau. In this study, previously collected specimens that were recorded as Microtus irani from southeastern Turkey were reevaluated by karyologically comparing different species distributed throughout southeastern Turkey. The taxonomic status of this species was raised to a new species, Microtus elbeyli sp. nov., which has dark ochreous dorsal color, agrestis morphotype in M-2, and 2n = 46, NF = 50, NFa = 46 karyotype. Protective effect of flaxseed oil on renal injury in hyperlipidaemic rats: The effect of flaxseed oil on hyperlipidaemia

This study evaluated the possible effects of flaxseed oil on renal damage associated with hyperlipidaemic rats. Wistar albino male rats were divided into three groups. Group I was fed with a pellet chow. Group II was fed with a high cholesterol diet (HCD) consisting of 5% cholesterol and 0.35% cholic acid added to the pellet chow. Group III was fed with the same HCD, but were orally treated with a dose of 15 mg/kg body wt/day flaxseed oil. Flaxseed oil treatment started 1 week before and continued throughout the 22 weeks of the HCD. At the end of the experiment, renal tissue and blood samples were collected. The biochemical and hist . . .opathological findings confirmed renal damage in hypercholesterolaemia conditions. Flaxseed oil reduced the hypercholesterolaemia-induced increase in the serum levels of total cholesterol, LDL and urea. Oil red O stain revealed that lowered serum lipid was accompanied by a decreased deposition of neutral lipid. Flaxseed oil effectively reversed these abnormalities, verifying the protective effects of flaxseed oil in ameliorating renal injuries associated with hypercholesterolaemia. Taxonomic status of the genus Spermophilus (Mammalia : Rodentia) in Turkey and Iran with description of a new species

We report a new species of Spermophilus ( Rodentia: Sciuridae), here designated as S. torosensis sp. nov., distributed in the Taurus Mountains in southern Anatolia, Turkey. A total of 161 specimens of the genus Spermophilus from Turkey and Iran were analyzed for their morphological, morphometric, and karyological characteristics. Uni- and multi-variate statistical analyses of morphologic data for 95 adult specimens yielded 4 distinct groups. Taxonomic evaluations classified the specimens into 4 species Spermophilus citellus, S. xanthopymnus, S. fulvus and S. torosensis sp. nov. Morphometrics, coat coloration, a brush-shaped tail, an . . .d a NFa value of 72 are diagnostic characters that distinguish S. torosensis sp. nov. from the other species. Effect of the composition of methanol-water mixtures on tacticity of poly(N-ethylacrylamide) gel

Two series of macroporous poly(N-ethylacrylamide) (PNEAM) gels are synthesized in different composition of methanol-water mixtures (xm=0, 0.06, 0.13, 0.21, 0.31, and 0.43; where xm=mole fraction of methanol) in presence as well as in the absence of 0.1M Y(OTf)3 Lewis acid as additive. The gels synthesized in the absence of Lewis acid are atactic and in the presence of the same are isotactic. Synthesis of the corresponding linear PNEAM homopolymers shows that, the isotacticity (meso dyad, %) of the resulted polymers increases for the gels prepared in the presence of Lewis acid (LA) and remains constant for the gel prepared in the abs . . .ence of LA, respectively, with the increase in the concentration of the synthesis solvent methanol. SEM micrographs reveal that, the hydrogels synthesized in the presence of LA are more porous than the gels prepared in the absence of LA. Swelling ratio of all the hydrogels decreases with the increase in the temperature and LA gels show higher swelling ratio values than non LA gels (NLA). Deswelling rate of the hydrogels prepared in methanol-water mixture in presence of LA is faster than the hydrogels prepared in absence of LA. Moreover, reswelling rate increases with increase in the isotacticity of the PNEAM segment in the gel. All these results have been explained on the basis of the formation of highly porous hydrogels with higher isotactic PNEAM chain segment in the presence of LA in methanol-water mixtures. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc Daha fazlası Daha az
