Secondary mathematics teachers' conceptions of mathematical literacy

Genc M. | Erbas A.K.

Article | 2019 | International Journal of Education in Mathematics, Science and Technology7 ( 3 ) , pp.222 - 237

The purpose of this study was to investigate secondary mathematics teachers' conceptions of mathematical literacy, which are important to consider when is essential to address in designing and implementing effective approaches. Data sources included semi-structured interviews with 16 in-service mathematics teachers from different types of secondary schools. Data analysis utilized open coding in order to identify and label patterns and themes. Results indicated that teachers' conceptions of mathematical literacy could be categorized into seven groups: (i) Possession of mathematical knowledge and skills, (ii) Functional mathematics, ( . . .iii) Problem solving, (iv) Mathematical thinking, reasoning and argumentation (v) Innate mathematical ability, (vi) Conceptual understanding, and (vii) Motivation to learn mathematics. The teachers participated in this study often expressed multiple and simultaneously held conceptions of mathematical literacy. Even though this would suggest that teachers may have confusing and ambiguous understandings of the nature of mathematical literacy, it may also reflect richness in teachers' understanding of various aspects of mathematical literacy. © 2019 International Journal of Education in Mathematics, Science and Technology. Effect of saturation-temperature on the performance of a vapour-compression refrigeration-cycle working on different refrigerants using exergy method

Kopac M. | Zemher B.

Article | 2006 | International Journal of Energy Research30 ( 9 ) , pp.729 - 740

In this study, the behaviour of a vapour-compression refrigeration cycle, for different refrigerants such as NH3, R-12, R-22 and HFC-134a was investigated using the exergy method. The cooling load of the plant and the saturation-temperature of the cold chamber were held constant, whereas the saturation-temperatures of the evaporator and the condenser were varied from 303 to 313 K and 258 to 248 K, respectively. The irreversibility rates (or exergy destruction rates) of sub-regions for the whole cycle, using energy and exergy analysis, were determined for each refrigerant. The effects of changes in the saturation-temperature in the c . . .ondenser and evaporator on the irreversibility rate of the cycle were obtained for each refrigerant. The relations between the total irreversibility rate of the plant and the irreversibility rate of the condenser and the evaporator were determined for different values of saturation temperatures of the condenser and the evaporator. The COP of the cycle and the rational efficiency were determined for each of the refrigerants and compared with each other. Among the refrigerants used, R-12 was found to be the most economical refrigerant as compared with the others. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd Daha fazlası Daha az

Afsar, Baris | Elsurer, Rengin | Kanbay, Mehmet

Article | 2012 | INTERNATIONAL UROLOGY AND NEPHROLOGY44 ( 5 ) , pp.1507 - 1514

To evaluate the relationship between eating pattern (regular breakfast, lunch and dinner) and dialysis sessions, laboratory and sociodemographic characteristics in hemodialysis (HD) patients. In this cross-sectional study eating patterns, sociodemographic, laboratory and clinical parameters, depressive symptoms, quality of life, cognitive function and appetite status were assessed. Eighty-two HD patients on morning session and 60 patients on midday HD session schedules were included. Ten patients had only breakfast, 17 patients had only lunch, 26 patients had only dinner, 5 patients had breakfast and lunch but not dinner, 28 patient . . .s had breakfast and dinner but not lunch, 29 patients had lunch and dinner but not breakfast, and 19 patients had neither breakfast, nor lunch, nor dinner. In the whole group, only 8 patients reported that they had regularly eaten breakfast, lunch or dinner in all days of the week. Midday HD session, better appetite, and higher income were independently associated with having breakfast. Morning HD session, better appetite score, and higher income were independently associated with having lunch. Morning session versus midday session, nPNA, presence of hypertension, and the Mental Component Summary Score of SF-36 were independently associated with having dinner. The majority of HD patients eat one or two meals per day. Having breakfast (or lunch) is associated with midday dialysis session (or morning dialysis session, respectively), better appetite, and satisfactory income. Eating dinner was associated with morning dialysis session, hypertension, higher protein intake and higher SF-36 mental component summary score Daha fazlası Daha az

Does collagenase affect the electrophysiological parameters of nerve trunk?

Dalkilic N. | Kiziltan E. | Pehlivan F. | Kose K.

Article | 2003 | Yakugaku Zasshi123 ( 12 ) , pp.1031 - 1037

Collegenase is widely used in the process of teasing a nerve in order to perform single fiber action potential (SFAP) recordings. In this study, the effects of collagenase on nerve conduction parameters were investigated. To accomplish this, normal compound action potentials (nCAPs) were recorded from isolated frog sciatic nerve at various distances using the suction technique. Then, the same nerve was treated with collagenased Ringer's solution (3.5 mg/ml, Sigma Type XI) for 90 minutes and action potentials (cCAPs) were recorded again. Numerical analysis of these records was performed and the results were compared. Using the nCAP a . . .nd cCAP recordings, the conduction velocity distributions (CVD) of the individual nerve trunks were determined by a method that we have previously described. Statistical results indicated significant differences ( Daha fazlası Daha az

Article | 2018 | MEDICAL JOURNAL OF BAKIRKOY14 ( 1 ) , pp.17 - 23

Objective: This study was conducted with the aim of determining knowledge and behavior of nurses about pain management. Material and Method: The study was designed as a cross-sectional study. The study was performed on 560 nurses between February and April 2014. Data were collected by using Nursing Information Form and The Survey Regarding Nurses' Knowledge and Behavior Regarding Pain. Data were evaluated by using descriptive statistical methods, Student's t-test, One-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Results: Out of total 560 nurses, 45.2% were in the age group of 29-38 years, 88.6% were female, 66.1% had a graduation degree, 69. . . .8% were working in internal diseases units and 91.6% were working as a bedside nurse, 39.5% of nurses had an experience less than 5-year, 56.2% of nurses had no in-service training regarding pain, and 76.6% did not follow the literature about pain. One-third of nurses (35.2%) were not using scales for pain often. In the survey, nurses scored 4.95 +/- 2.16 points in knowledge and behavior about pain. The average knowledge and behavior in pain scores of nurses with post graduate degrees (6.31 +/- 2.19, p=0.002), of nurses who followed nursing publications (5.30 +/- 2.25, p=0.03) and of nurses those always used the pain scales (5.26 +/- 2.38, p=0.02) were significantly high. Longer the working times, lower the average knowledge and behavior scores of the nurses (p>0.05). The average knowledge and behavior score of nurses working in internal diseases units were higher than the scores of ones working in surgical units (p>0.05). The nurses who had in-service training in pain had higher average scores (p>0.05). Conclusions: The study indicates that nurses do not have sufficient knowledge about diagnosis and management of pai Daha fazlası Daha az

Acute dystonia during pegylated interferon alpha therapy in a case with chronic hepatitis B infection

Atasoy, N | Ustundag, Y | Konuk, N | Atik, L

Review | 2004 | CLINICAL NEUROPHARMACOLOGY27 ( 3 ) , pp.105 - 107

Interferon (IFN) is the most widely prescribed drug of choice for chronic hepatitis B infection, which is a common health problem in our country. Therapy with IFN-alpha may be associated with a number of neuropsychiatric symptoms, such as Parkinsonism, akathisia, seizure, and depressive disorders. In this case report, we present clinical and laboratory findings of a case with chronic hepatitis B that developed acute dystonia soon after the first dose of pegylated interferon alpha. As far as we know, this is the first report in English literature indicating such an adverse effect of pegylated interferon alpha.
