The Delta(3)-imidazoline 3-oxides 1 undergo diastereoselective cycloaddition with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate 2 to give 3a,4,5,6-tetrahydroimidazo[1,5-b]isoxazoles 3. A novel dinuclear double-stranded helical complexes of bis(terdentate) N4O2 donor ligand with silver(I) and zinc(II) d(10) metal ions

Reaction of the hexadentate N4O2-donor ligand 6,6'-bis(3-hydrazonobutan-2-one)-2,2'-bipyridine (L) with Ag-(I) and Zn-(II) affords a dinuclear double stranded helicate species [Ag2L2](2+) (1a) and [Zn2L2](2+) (1b), in which partitioning of the ligand into two bis-tridentate pyridyl-ketoimine chelating units allow each ligand to bridge both metal centres. X-ray crystallography, ESI-MS and UV-Vis spectrophotometric titration experiments reveal that the complex (1a) retains its solid-state structure in solution. The crystal structure of(1a) provides the first example of dinuclear silver(I) complex in which both of the metal centres can . . . be approximated as a seven coordinate distorted mono-capped trigonal prism in which the Ag center dot center dot center dot Ag close contact of 3.034(4) angstrom is taken into account and forms the cap. The counter-ions do not interact with metal centres but hydrogen bond to N-H protons of the hydrazonic arms from the separate strands. The adjacent helical units are cross-linked together via NH center dot center dot center dot O-keto hydrogen bonding to maintain the supramolecular structure. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The investigation of the neutron emission spectra of Th-232 and U-238 for neutron incident energy from 2 to 18 MeV

In this study, experimental neutron-emission spectra produced by (n, xn) reactions on nuclei Th-232 have been compared with experimental U-238(n, xn) neutron-emission spectra from 2 to 18 MeV. Angle-integrated cross-sections in neutron induced reactions on targets U-238 have been calculated at the bombarding energies from 2 to 18 MeV. In the calculations, the geometry dependent hybrid model and the cascade exciton model including the effects of pre-equilibrium have been used. In addition, we have described how multiple pre-equilibrium emissions can be included in the Feshbach-Kerman-Koonin (FKK) fully quantum-mechanical theory. Study on steel furnace slags with high MgO as additive in Portland cement

In this study, usability of Basic Oxygen Process (BOP) slags of Kardemir Iron and Steel Plant, Karabuk, Turkey as an additive into cement was investigated. Slags were ground to 4000 and 4700 cm(2)/g levels, and added in ratios 15, 30 and 45 wt.%. Volume expansion, setting time, compressive strength and bending strength tests were measured according to Turkish standards. Due to impurities of the slags, the 2- and 7-day compression strengths decrease with increase in amount of Mn, but this decrease is lower in the 28-day compression strength, 30 wt.%. New cockles (Bivalvia: Cardiidae: Lymnocardiinae) from Late Pleistocene Lake Karapinar (Turkey): Discovery of a Pontocaspian refuge?

Three species of lymnocardiine cockles (Bivalvia: Cardiidae) from Late Pleistocene deposits near Karapinar (Konya Basin, Anatolia, South Turkey) are reported. Two of the three species are described as new (Monodacna pseudocolorata and Adacna yaninae). A third species (Hypanis ?plicatum) is represented by two incomplete valves. Radiocarbon ages of circa 35-43 kA were obtained for the fauna. The lack of lymnocardiine cockles in Pleistocene Anatolian inland lake deposits raises the possibility that the new record represents a short lived occurrence. We raise the possibility that the Karapinar Basin cockles may have been introduced from . . . the Black Sea region through avian dispersal, although we cannot rule out their cryptic existence in the region during the Pleistocene. The apparent absence of Monodacna colorata group of cockles in the Black Sea Basin during the last glacial raises the possibility that the Karapinar region may have served as a true refugium rather than just a sink for Pontocaspian biota. A novel analytical system involving hydride generation and gold-coated W-coil trapping atomic absorption spectrometry for selenium determination at ng l(-1) level

A novel analytical technique was developed where gaseous hydrogen selenide formed by sodium tetra hydrobora te reduction is transported to and trapped on a resistively heated gold-coated W-coil atom trap for in situ preconcentration. Gold coating on W-coil was prepared by using an organic solution of Au. The atom trap is held at 165 degrees C during the collection stage and is heated up to 675 degrees C for revolatilization; analyte species formed are transported to an externally heated quartz T-tube where the atornization takes place and the transient signal is obtained. The carrier gas consisted of 112.5 ml min' At with 75 ml min( . . .-1) H-2 during the collection step and 112.5 ml min(-1) At with 450 ml min(-1) H-2 in the revolatilization step. The half width of the transient signal obtained is less than 0.5 s. The RSD for the measurements was found to be 3.9% (n = 11) for 0.10 mu g l(-1) Se using peak height measurements. The calibration plot for 27.0 ml of sample collected in 4.0 min using a flow rate of 6.75 ml min(-1) was linear between 0.13 and 2.0 mu g l(-1) of Se. The limit of detection (3 s) is 39 ng l(-1). The enhancement factor for the characteristic concentration (Co) was found to be 20.1 when compared to conventional hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry system without trap. In order to check the accuracy of the method. standard reference material, natural water NIST 1640 was employed; the result was found to be in good agreement with the certified value at the 95% confidence level. Effects of scarf joints on bending strength and modulus of elasticity to laminated veneer lumber (LVL)

The role of geometry on the mechanical performance of scarf joints in laminated veneer lumber (LVL) bonded with phenol formaldehyde and melamine formaldehyde (MF) adhesives was investigated. Model joints consists of 3, 4 and 5 mm veneer thicknesses at 30 degrees, 45 degrees and 60 degrees of varying scarf joints for LVL produced from brutia pine (Pinus brutia Ten) and elm (Ulmus compestris 1.) woods. However, there is little information available concerning the bending strength and modulus of elasticity for LVL, and in particular, scarf joints in these field. In this study, it was aimed to determine the bending strength and modulus . . .of elasticity for LVL. For this purpose, samples were tested according to TS EN 3 10 standard. It was observed that the highest bending strength (291.5 N/mm(2)) and modulus of elasticity (28 101 N/mm(2)) were obtained in control (solid wood) samples having three layered LVL, jointed with 30 degrees angle and bonded with MF adhesive. Cost effect of earthquake region and soil type for office buildings in Turkey

In this study, the change in the load-bearing system cost of a reinforced concrete office building has been investigated in relation to the earthquake regions and soil types. Three different office projects each with five stories were investigated. The structural design calculations have been made according to four different soil types and four different earthquake regions. According to each combination, concrete, steel and formwork adopted approximations were calculated to reach the rough cost of each office building.
