Oxygen transfer in flow around and over stones placed in a laboratory flume

Cokgor, S | Kucukali, S

Article | 2004 | ECOLOGICAL ENGINEERING23 ( 3 ) , pp.205 - 219

Oxygen transfer around stones located within a stream was studied in a laboratory-recirculating flume. The present study focused on two main points: first, it examined the change in dissolved oxygen (DO) levels between a section upstream and a section downstream of the stones and second, it documented the DO distribution around the stones. The presence of stones increased the DO transfer efficiency by 0-0.60 in the flume. Therefore stones could be used in river reclamation projects to provide aeration. The experiments with two stones resulted in higher DO transfer efficiencies such as 0.43 compared to those obtained in the case of a . . . single stone with the highest values of 0.26. The relative depth of the flow compared to the height of the stone(s) is an important parameter characterizing the DO ratios. When the stone(s) was submerged, there were marginal to no changes in the level of DO in the flow. The changes in DO levels were substantial when the stones were piercing through the water surface. Some of the DO improvements obtained by including the stone(s) were comparable to those reported in the literature when man-made structures were placed in streams. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The Impact of Trade Liberalization on the Export of MENA Countries to OECD Trade Partners

Cestepe, Hamza | Yildirim, Ertugrul | Bahtiyar, Bersu

Conference Object | 2015 | 2ND GLOBAL CONFERENCE ON BUSINESS, ECONOMICS, MANAGEMENT AND TOURISM23 , pp.1440 - 1445

Trade performance of The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions has been dismally progressed. In the period of 20002009, to remove obstacles on the trade, most of the MENA countries have pursued the trade liberalization policy which consists of free trade agreements and WTO membership. This study employs on panel gravity model to examine the effect of trade liberalization policy on the export of 13 MENA countries to 30 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) trading partners. By using alternative estimators to take the zero trade problem and endogeneity problem into account, this study finds that whereas W . . .TO membership negatively affects the export of MENA countries, free trade agreements have a positive impact on the export of those countries. So trade liberalization via free trade agreement may be a useful policy to increase export of MENA countries (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V Daha fazlası Daha az

Gurel, A | Armutcu, F | Sahin, S | Sogut, S | Ozyurt, H | Gulec, M | Kutlu, NO

Article | 2004 | CLINICA CHIMICA ACTA339 ( 01.Feb ) , pp.33 - 41

Background: The aim of this study was to determine the acute effects of antioxidant caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) and alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) on nitric oxide (NO) production, neutrophil infiltration, and antioxidant enzyme activities on an in vivo model of renal ischemia-reperfusion injury. Methods: Rats were divided into five equal groups each consisting six rats: sham operation, ischemia, ischemia-reperfusion (I/R), I/R plus CAPE, and I/R plus vitamin E groups. CAPE or vitamin E was administered intraperitoneally before reperfusion. After experimental procedure, rats were sacrificed and both ipsilateral and contralatera . . .l kidneys were removed and prepared for NO concentrations, myeloperoxidase (MPO), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities. Results: Acute administration of vitamin E decreased NO concentrations in both ipsilateral and contralateral renal tissues compared to I/R group. SOD activity was increased in I/R and I/R + CAPE groups compared to sham operation group. The most prominent results were encountered in MPO activities, which did not change in contralateral kidneys in both ischemia and I/R groups. There was a significant decrease in ipsilateral MPO activity in ischemia group and a significant increase in I/R group compared to sham operation group. Pretreatment with intraperitoneal CAPE significantly diminished the tissue MPO activity indicating the prevention of the neutrophil sequestration into the kidney. Conclusion: There is a role for CAPE in attenuation in renal damage after I/R injury of the kidney, in part at least by inhibition of neutrophil sequestration. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Public participation in forestry in Turkey

Atmis, Erdogan | Ozden, Sezgin | Lise, Wietze

Article | 2007 | ECOLOGICAL ECONOMICS62 ( 2 ) , pp.352 - 359

Recently public participation in forestry has been seriously considered in Turkey. Participation is however quite a challenge for a country with a long tradition of top-down management and a strong bottom-up dependence on public provisioning. in such a setting, it may not be surprising that the experiences with public participation in forestry in Turkey are mixed. There are some positive initiatives like the creation of farmer's cooperatives and NGOs, but their role is quite limited and small of scale. This paper is bringing together different views based on existing studies in Turkish related to Turkey's experience with implementin . . .g public participation in forestry. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Term of Strategic Entrepreneurship and Schumpeter's Creative Destruction Theory

Tuluce, Nadide Sevil | Yurtkur, Asuman Koc

Conference Object | 2015 | 11TH INTERNATIONAL STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE207 , pp.720 - 728

The literature of strategic entrepreneurship is one of the few areas of strategic management writing in which Joseph Schumpeter has argued that entrepreneurs create innovations in the face of competition and thereby generate economic growth. The fundamental question in the field of strategic management is how firms achieve and sustain competitive advantage especially in the work of Schumpeter [1934, 1942] who argued that the main agents of economic growth are the entrepreneurs. The aim of this paper is to summarize and critically review the concept of the strategic entrepreneurship in the light of economics history by creating a bet . . .ter understanding of the intersection of the academic fields of entrepreneurship and strategic management. Evaluation of hs-CRP and visseral adiposity index in patients with policystic ovary syndrome by clinical and laboratory findings

Un, B. | Dolapcioglu, K. S. | Okyay, A. Guler | Sahin, H. | Beyazit, A.

Article | 2016 | EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY AND REPRODUCTIVE BIOLOGY204 , pp.16 - 20

Aim: In this study, we aimed to evaluate two cardiovascular risk markers, hs-CRP and visseral adiposity index, in patients with policystic ovary syndrome in association with clinical and laboratory findings. Material and method: Study group included 75 patients who were diagnosed as PCOS according to the criteria of AE-PCOS 2006 and control group included 75 non-PCOS patients who were subsequently admitted to outpatient clinic for smear control, with urinary or vaginal symptoms. Physical and sonographic examinations were made to all subjects. Mean arterial pressure, waist/hip ratio and body mass index were calculated. Fasting blood . . .glucose and insulin, HbA1c, lipids, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), estradiol, follicle stimulating hormon, luteinising hormone, timid stimulating hormone, prolaktin, total testosteron and sex hormone binding globulin were tested in venous blood samples collected from cases following overnight fast in follicular phase of spontaneous or induced menstruation. Visceral adiposity index was also calculated. Findings: No statistically significant difference was found between PCOS group and control group concerning hs-CRP and VAI (p > 0.05). When patients in PCOS group were further grouped as obese and non-obese, hs-CRP and VAI values in obese group were significantly higher than those in non-obese. group (p < 0.001). However, when control group were further grouped as obese and non-obese, there was no significant difference in terms of hs-CRP between groups (p > 0.05), VAI values were significantly higher in obese control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: According to the results of our study, hs-CRP stands for a better and more specific marker than VAI to determine metabolic components and predictive risks for cardiovascular diseases in patients with PCOS. Further studies with larger populations are needed in order to determine cardiovascular risks particularly in young PCOS patients. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. A rare cause of acute abdomen in the ED: Chemotherapy-induced pneumatosis intestinalis

Ozturk, Mesut | Camlidag, Ilkay | Nural, Mehmet Selim | Ozbalci, Gokhan Selcuk | Bekci, Tumay

Article | 2017 | TURKISH JOURNAL OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE17 ( 4 ) , pp.151 - 153

Pneumatosis intestinalis (PI) and portomesenteric venous gas (PVG) refers to the presence of air within the intestinal wall and portomesenteric vessels. Most of the time, it is associated with mesenteric ischemia that requires immediate surgical intervention as it has high mortality rate. It may also be seen secondary to various conditions, including infections, surgeries, and some chemotherapeutic drugs. A 61-year old-male was admitted to our emergency department complaining of abdominal pain after chemotherapy. Radiological evaluation of the patient demonstrated massive PVG and PI. Patient underwent urgent surgery due to the possi . . .bility of intestinal ischemia and infarction, but no necrosis was identified Chemotherapeutic drug-induced PI and PVG was the final diagnosis. Although PI and PVG are signs of mesenteric ischemia and intestinal necrosis most the of time, chemotherapeutic drugs may also cause PI and PVG rarely. Recent history of chemotheraphy and absence of any mesenteric vascular occlusion may be the diagnostic clue. Copyright (C) 2017 The Emergency Medicine Association of Turkey. Liquid-liquid extraction of neodymium ions from aqueous solutions of NdCl3 by phosphonium-based ionic liquids

Panigrahi, Mrutyunjay | Grabda, Mariusz | Kozak, Dmytro | Dorai, Arunkumar | Shibata, Etsuro | Kawamura, Junichi | Nakamura, Takashi

Article | 2016 | SEPARATION AND PURIFICATION TECHNOLOGY171 , pp.263 - 269

A protocol for the recovery of rare earth elements based on the dissolution of an aqueous solution of a rare earth metal chloride in an ionic liquid (IL) followed by stripping of the dissolved metal ions into an aqueous phase is proposed. The use of ILs is a departure from the traditional strategies employed for extraction. Liquid-liquid extraction of neodymium (Nd) ions from an aqueous solution of NdCl3 with and without hydrochloric acid (HCl) was carried out using phosphonium-based ILs, namely trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium benzoate [T-66614][BA] and trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [T-66614][TFSA . . .] The extraction was also conducted using a mixture of the aforementioned ILs and toluene. The efficiency of the extraction decreased with increasing concentrations of Nd in the aqueous solution. Furthermore, increasing the concentration of HCl in the aqueous phase decreased the percentage of extracted Nd ions. It indicates that the extraction followed a neutral or ion-pair extraction type of mechanism. Stripping of Nd ions from the metal-loaded organic phase using different acids revealed that HCl and HNO3 were the most effective stripping agents for complete re-extraction of the metal ions. Trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium-based IL with a benzoate counter anion was more effective for Nd extraction than the congener with the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. An overview of the field of semiotics

Batu, Bengu

Conference Object | 2012 | WORLD CONFERENCE ON DESIGN, ARTS AND EDUCATION (DAE-2012)51 , pp.464 - 469

The quantitative increase in recent years of research into semiotics, among other methods of reading works of art, is notable. Since semiotics is the act of reading as based on a meta-language that is constructed and grounded in logic, understanding the methods applied by the field requires time and experience. In addition, the application of models that differ in relation to each other under different schools of thought and under different names makes its yet more difficult to comprehend the field of semiotics. Despite the different models that are available, approaches display certain commonalities as they are born of the same fou . . .ndations and objectives. This study will aim to pinpoint the common aspects of the intellectual foundations, methods, objectives and research limitations of the different schools of thought and the models that are involved in the study of semiotics.
