21st Century Reflections of an Academic Dean

Neal, C. Warren

A global revolution to education is occurring. Information technology is not just changing disciplines but is also materially affecting the delivery process of a classroom and the learning process. Ironically the old British higher education system from centuries ago may revisit today because technology available to students of all ages. Addressing the challenges of this change will require higher education to revisit policies such as tenure requirements with the focus being to reduce fixed cost and increase accountability. It will require new changes in delivery systems and learning paradigm ...Daha fazlası

Synthesis and characterization of poly(N-isopropyl acryl amide)-g-poly(LINOLEIC ACID)/poly(linolenic acid) graft copolymers

Allı, Abdulkadir | Hazer, Baki

To diversify edible oil thermoresponsive polymer composites, polymeric linoleic acid peroxide (PLina) and polymeric linolenic acid peroxide (PLinl) were obtained by the autoxidation of linoleic acid (Lina) and linolenic acid (Linl), respectively. The autoxidation of Lina and Linl under air at room temperature rendered waxy soluble polymeric peroxide, having a soluble fraction in chloroform of more than 91 wt% and containing up to 1.0 wt% of peroxide. The soluble polymeric oil macro-peroxide was used to initiate the free radical polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide, NIPAM, resulting in PLina ...Daha fazlası

Synthesis and characterization of poly(methyl methacrylate-block-ethylene glycol-block-methyl methacrylate) block copolymers by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization

Öztürk, Temel | Göktaş, Melahat | Hazer, Baki

Synthesis of poly(methyl methacrylate-block-ethylene glycol-block-methyl methacrylate) triblock copolymers by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) by using a novel dual macro initiator (RAFT-agent) is reported. RAFT-agent is obtained from potassium salt of the ethyl xanthegonate and the terminally brominated poly(ethylene glycol) (Br-PEG-Br) which is synthesized by the reaction of poly(ethylene glycol) [PEG] with Mn= 3000 Dalton and 3-bromopropionyl chloride. The principal parameters such as monomer concentration, initiator concentration, and polymerization time that affect ...Daha fazlası

Epilepsy diagnosis using probability density functions of EEG signals

Orhan, Umut | Hekim, Mahmut | Özer, Mahmut | Provaznik, Ivo

In this paper, the equal frequency discretization (EFD) based probability density approach was proposed to be used in the diagnosis of epilepsy from electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. For this aim, EEG signals were decomposed by using the discrete wavelet discretization (DWT) method into subbands, the coefficients in each subband were discretized to several intervals by EFD method, and the probability density of each subband of each EEG segment was computed according to the number of coefficients in discrete intervals. Then, two probability density functions were defined by means of the curve ...Daha fazlası

Epileptic seizure detection using artificial neural network and a new feature extraction approach based on equal width discretization

Orhan, Umut | Hekim, Mahmut | Özer, Mahmut

In this study, we proposed a new feature extraction approach based on equal width discretization (EWD) method and used the statistical features obtained by means of this approach as the inputs of multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) model in the detection of epileptic seizure from Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. For this aim, EEG signals were discretized by EWD method, histograms of the signals were obtained according to the density of each discrete interval, and finally these histograms were used as the inputs of MLPNN models both without any hidden layer and with a hidden layer w ...Daha fazlası

A SEVERELY MENTAL AND MOTOR RETARDED BOY WITH MONOSOMY 9pter -> p22, TRISOMY 10q26 -> qter DUE TO PATERNAL RECIPROCAL TRANSLOCATION 46,XY,t(9;10)(p23;q26)

Akbas, E. | Polat, S. | Karakas-Celik, S. | Altintas, Z. Mert | Yildirim, M. | Yilgor, E.

A severely mental and motor retarded hoe with monosomy 9pter -> p22, trisomy 10q26 -> qter due to paternal reciprocal translocation 46,xy,t(9;10)(p23;q26): We report on a twenty-two months old male patient with hypotonia, mental and motor retardation and trigonocephaly. Standard GTG banding chromosomal analysis (from metaphyses of a periferal blood lymphocyte culture) showed 46,XY, der(9) monosomy 9pter -> p22, trisomy 10q26 -> qter karyotype. This unbalanced translocation resulted from the father's (9,10) (p22;p26) karyotype. Deletions of the terminal part of 9p and partial trisomy of chromos ...Daha fazlası

Evaluation of Hand Asymmetry in Relation to Hand Preference

Barut, Cagatay | Sevinc, Ozdemir | Sumbuloglu, Vildan

We evaluated the asymmetric hand measurements in right- and left-handed individuals. 343 men and 290 women aged 18-42 years (22.11 +/- 2.07) participated in the study. There were no statistically significant differences when right left differences in hand length, third finger length, pal mar length, and the digit index value were evaluated according to hand preference and sex. Statistically significant differences were found for right left differences in hand width, hand-shape index, and the pal mar length/width according to hand preference. The strong left-handers, weak left-handers, and ambi ...Daha fazlası
