Effects of Impaired Fasting Glucose on Aortic Elasticity

Dogan, S. M. | Aktop, Z. | Aydin, M. | Karabag, T. | Sayin, M. R. | Bilici, H. M. | Atmaca, H.

Background: The pathophysiology of atherosclerosis development in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) is similar to that in nondiabetics. However, atherosclerosis develops earlier and runs a rapid course in patients with diabetes. Aortic stiffness, strain and distensibility are the parameters used to assess an increase in arterial stiffness and can be measured by invasive and non-invasive methods. Method: Aortic elastic properties were compared among patients with normal oral glucose tolerance test but impaired fasting glucose and healthy individuals. The study group consisted of 50 subjects ...Daha fazlası

Partial HELLP syndrome: Maternal, perinatal, subsequent pregnancy and long-term maternal outcomes

Aydin, Serdar | Ersan, Firat | Ark, Cemal | Aydin, Cagri Arioglu

AimsHemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count (HELLP) syndrome, in its complete form, is associated with increased risk of maternal mortality and increased rate of serious obstetric complications, such as acute renal failure, hepatic failure, abruptio placentae, pulmonary edema, sepsis, hemorrhage and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy. To compare maternal and perinatal outcomes, we investigated the subsequent pregnancy outcomes and long-term complications of women with partial HELLP (pHELLP) and complete HELLP (cHELLP) syndromes. Material and MethodsIn this retrospective s ...Daha fazlası

Use of warm priming solution in open heart surgery: its effects on hemodynamics and acute inflammation

Buyukates, M. | Acikgoz, S. | Kandemir, O. | Aktunc, E. | Ceylan, E. | Can, M.

Cardiac surgery causes an acute inflammatory response and organ damage. In this study, for the first time in the literature, we compared the effects of priming solutions at 20 degrees C and 36 degrees C on acute inflammatory markers and hemo-dynamic parameters. Forty patients were recruited and randomized into two groups, each consisting of 20 participants who underwent elective coronary artery bypass grafting operation. Groups were primed with the same solution at different temperatures. Hemodynamic parameters were recorded. Blood samples were drawn pre-operatively and at the 15(th) and 60(th ...Daha fazlası

Extremely Rare Cardiac Involvement: Recurrent Pericardial Hydatid Cyst

Akpinar, Ibrahim | Tekeli, Sebahat | Sen, Taner | Sen, Nihat | Basar, Nurcan | Cagli, Kumral Ergun | Cay, Serkan

Echinococcus granulosus is a common infestation in sheep and cattle raising countries. Although it is typically encountered in liver and lung, rare cardiac involvement of this infestation has very important clinical complications such as heart failure, valve regurgitation, pericardial effusion-tamponade and arrhythmia. In addition, pericardial infestation is an extremely rare condition of Echinococcus granulosus. Here, we report a case of recurrent pericardial hydatid cyst presenting exertional dyspnea, palpitation and presyncope attacks in a 72-year-old man. The diagnosis of recurrent pericar ...Daha fazlası

Prolonged retention and in vivo evaluation of cationic nanoparticles loaded with Mitomycin C designed for intravesical chemotherapy of bladder tumours

Erdogar, Nazli | Iskit, Alper B. | Mungan, N. Aydin | Bilensoy, Erem

To overcome the recurrence problem in bladder tumours; nanoparticles with positive surface charge may improve interaction with biological membranes for intravesical administration. The aim of this study was to design, develop and evaluate (in vitro-in vivo) cationic nanoparticles based on chitosan, poly-L-lysine or polycaprolactone for the effective intravesical delivery of chemotherapeutic agent MMC in a rat model. Poly-L-lysine-coated polycaprolactone nanoparticles and chitosan-coated polycaprolactone nanoparticles were prepared by the double emulsion technique. Chitosan nanoparticles were p ...Daha fazlası

Expression of histamine receptors (H-1, H-2, and H-3) in the rabbit endolymphatic sac: an immunohistochemical study

Dagli, Muharrem | Goksu, Nebil | Eryilmaz, Adil | Kuzey, Gamze Mocan | Bayazit, Yildirim | Gun, Banu Dogan | Gocer, Cehl

Objective: The endolymphatic sac (ES) is part of the membranous labyrinth of the inner ear. Its central role in immunologic activity within the inner ear has been confirmed by numerous studies. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of histamine receptors (H-1, H-2, H-3) in the rabbit ES. Methods: A total of 10 healthy male New Zealand white rabbits weighing 2 to 3 kg were used in the experiments. For immunohistochemical studies, immunostaining was performed according to the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex technique. Results: Serial sections of the ES of rabbits revealed the ...Daha fazlası

Determination of screw and nail withdrawal resistance of some important wood species

Aytekin, Alper

In this study, screw and nail withdrawal resistance of fir (Abies nordmanniana), oak (Quercus robur L.) black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) and Stone pine (Pinus pinea L.) wood were determined and compared. The data represent the testing of withdrawal resistance of three types of screws as smart, serrated and conventional and common nails. The specimens were prepared according to TS 6094 standards. The dimensions of the specimens were 5x5x15cm and for all of the directions. Moreover, the specimens were conditioned at ambient room temperature and 65+/-2% relative humidity. The screws and nails were ...Daha fazlası

Ventral cervicomedullary function compression secondary to condylus occipitalis (median occipital condyle), a rare entity

Kotil, K | Kalayci, M

Objective: Condylus occipitalis is presented in postmortem anatomic studies. There is no clinical study in the literature. Myelopathy due to anomalies of the craniovertebral junction is rare in neurosurgical practices. To our knowledge, myelopathy due to condylus occipitalis has not been reported before. Deaths of two cases were previously reported, but these were not live cases. Methods: We describe the case of a 40-year-old woman presenting with progressive myelopathy related to condylus occipitalis located in the anterior foramen magnum region. Results: Magnetic resonance imaging and comput ...Daha fazlası

Pulmonary artery aneurysm and coronary artary disease in a patient previous cardiac surgery

Kandemir, Oe. | Yildiz, Ue. | Tezcaner, T. | Zorlutuna, Yaman

Pulmonary artery aneurysms (PAA) are uncommon and the management of these conditions is not clear. Main PAA with high pulmonary pressure and right ventricular overload should be surgically managed because of the risk of rupture and dissection. However, isolated PAA, in the absence of left-to-right shunt or pulmonary hypertension, probably have a benign course and conservative treatment and close follow-up may be appropriate. The case of a 62-year-old patient with pulmonary artery aneurysm and coronary artery disease who had previous cardiac surgery is presented here.
