Vitamin E and antioxidant activity; its role in slow coronary flow

Celik, Veysel Kenan | Eken, Imge Ezgi | Yildiz, Gursel | Yilmaz, Mehmet Birhan | Gurlek, Ahmet | Aydin, Huseyin

Aim: Oxidative stress, which is widely recognised as an important feature of many diseases, can be defined as an increased formation of reactive oxygen species or decreased antioxidant defense. In this study we measured plasma vitamin E levels and total antioxidant activity (AOA) in patients with slow coronary flow (SCF). Methods: The plasma vitamin E levels and AOA were measured in 40 patients with angiographically diagnosed SCF. Forty subjects with normal coronary flow (NCF) served as the control group. SCF and NCF were analysed, and blood samples were taken for plasma vitamin E levels and A ...Daha fazlası

Giant cell tumor of the capitate: an unusual case with 10 years follow-up

Duman, Serda | Sofu, Hakan | Camurcu, Yalkin | Gursu, Sarper | Oke, Ramadan

Giant cell tumor of the small bones, particularly the carpal bones of the hand, is exceedingly rare. We present a case report of giant cell tumor of the capitate in a 24 year-old female with 10 years postoperative follow-up. Although carpal bones are extremely unusual location, orthopedic surgeons should always keep in mind that differential diagnosis must include giant cell tumor of bone whenever an expansile osteolytic lesion with well-defined but nonsclerotic margins is identified in a young adult with closed physes.

A case report: antiviral triple therapy with telaprevir in a haemodialysed HCV patient in Turkey

Akhan, S. | Sayan, M. | Altunok, E. Sargin | Aynioglu, A.

A 49-year-old woman was diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C 7 years ago. She began haemodialysis at the same time. She was on the waiting list for kidney transplantation (KTx). The real-time PCR technique revealed an HCV RNA viral load of 212 000 IU/ml, genotype 1a, IL28B the rs12979860 minor allele heterozygous CT (rs8099917 TT homozygous). She had a history of first antiviral treatment for 48 weeks of PEG-IFN-alpha 2a, 135 mu g/week in 2011, but the HCV infection relapsed. Considering her relatively young age, candidacy for renal transplant, and the heterozygous pattern of IL28B, we decided t ...Daha fazlası

Stercoral colitis: diagnostic value of CT findings

Unal, Emre | Onur, Mehmet Ruhi | Balci, Sinan | Gormez, Aysegul | Akpinar, Erhan | Boge, Medine

PURPOSE We aimed to evaluate the CT findings of stercoral colitis (SC). METHODS Forty-one patients diagnosed with SC between February 2006 and April 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS Rectosigmoid colon was the most frequently involved segment (100%, n= 41). CT findings can be summarized as follows: dilatation >6 cm and wall thickening > 3 mm of the affected colon segment (100%, n= 41), pericolonic fat stranding (100%, n= 41), mucosal discontinuity (14.6 %, n= 6), presence of free air (14.6%, n= 6), free fluid (9.7%, n= 4), and pericolonic abscess (2.4%, n= 1). The sign most related w ...Daha fazlası

Coenzyme Q(10) treatment reduces lipid peroxidation, inducible and endothelial nitric oxide synthases, and germ cell-specific apoptosis in a rat model of testicular ischemia/reperfusion injury

Erol, Bulent | Bozlu, Murat | Hanci, Volkan | Tokgoz, Husnu | Bektas, Sibel | Mungan, Gorkem

In this experimental study, we assessed the preventive effects of coenzyme Q(10) (CoQ(10)) in a rat model of ischemia/reperfusion injury. The results of this study show that CoQ(10) administration before the reperfusion period of testicular torsion provides a significant decrease in testicular lipid peroxidation products and expressions of inducible nitric oxide synthase, endothelial nitric oxide synthase, and germ cell-specific apoptosis. 1-[6-(6-Acetylpyridin-2-yl)pyridin-2-yl]ethanone

Dogan, Huseyin Zekeriya | Sengul, Abdurrahman | Coles, Simon John

In the title compound, C14H12N2O2, the asymmetric unit comprises one half-molecule with an inversion center between the pyridine rings. The rings are trans coplanar with the acetyl groups deviating slightly from the mean planes, making a dihedral angle of 4.63 (4)degrees. In the crystal, molecules are linked by weak intermolecular C-H...O hydrogen bonds, forming a supramolecular sheet parallel to (100).

Spontaneous regression of cervical disc herniations

Gurkanlar, D. | Yucel, E. | Er, U. | Keskil, S.

The spontaneous regression of cervical disc herniations is a rare occurrence. Six herniated cervical discs that had regressed spontaneously are presented. All radiological disc regressions correlated well with clinical improvements. We want to underscore the potential for regression that should be considered in the evaluation and management of any patient with a herniated cervical disc.

Effects of Radiofrequency and Intranasal Steroid Treatments on Respiratory and Olfactory Functions in Nasal Obstruction

Sozen, Esra | Tansuker, Deniz | Yildirim, Omursen | Ucal, Yusuf Orhan | Coskun, Berna Uslu

Objective: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of radio-frequency ablation (RFA) and intranasal steroid (INS) treatments on respiratory and olfactory functions in patients with inferior concha hypertrophy and chronic nasal obstruction. Study Design and Setting: This was a prospective clinical trial performed at a tertiary referral center. Methods: We assessed patients with nasal obstruction between July 2011 and February 2012. The severity of the nasal obstruction in both groups was determined before treatment and 3 months after using a visual analog scale. For the purpose of an obje ...Daha fazlası

Comparison of three posterior malleolar fixation methods in trimalleolar ankle fractures

Kalem, Mahmut | Sahin, Ercan | Songur, Murat | Keser, Scicuk | Kinik, Hakall

This study aimed to compare the results of AP screws, PA screws and posterior buttress plate used in posterior malleolar fixation of trimalleolar fractures. In this study, the data of 104 trimalleolar fracture cases treated surgically between October 2011 and January 2014 were extracted from hospital records. Patient demographics (age, gender, body mass index), the presence of syndesmotic injury, fracture type (according to the Lauge-Hansen classification), the size of posterior malleolar fragment (measured on lateral radiographs) were recorded. The patients requiring postoperative care for at ...Daha fazlası

The effect of montelukast on soluble interleukin-2 receptor and tumor necrosis factor alpha in pediatric asthma

Can, Murat | Yuksel, Birol | Demirtas, Selda | Tomac, Nazan

Proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha and soluble interleukin 2 receptor (sIL-2R) are very important mediators in induction of inflammatory response in lung. The aim of this study was to investigate anti-inflammatory response of cysteinyl leukotriene receptor antagonist montelukast on macrophage and T-cell activation by sIL-2R and TNF-alpha in mild atopic asthmatic children. Fifteen children with mild-to-moderate atopic asthma and 15 nonatopic children as control, enrolled in the study. Asthmatic children were treated with montelukast, 5-mg tablets for 1 month. Lu ...Daha fazlası
