Transitioning into a ‘throwaway planet’

McCollough J. | Bayramoglu M.F. | He M.

Article | 2018 | International Journal of Consumer Studies42 ( 1 ) , pp.131 - 140

It is generally considered to be safer for the environment to repair a malfunctioning product for further reuse than to dispose of it and replace it with a newly manufactured product, unless the product is being replaced with a more energy efficient alternative. However, whereas United States has long been labelled a ‘throwaway society’, this paper presents the results of an international consumer survey which demonstrates that as other nations develop with respect to GDP per Capita (Gross Domestic Product per Capita), they too start transitioning into throwaway societies. This transition then calls into account of just how environm . . .entally damaging this practice will become. © 2017 John Wiley & Sons Lt Daha fazlası Daha az

Objects: To investigate the effects of curcumin (CUR) and melatonin (MEL) on new bone formation following rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in rats. Setting and Sample Population: For this study, 24 12-week-old adult male Wistar albino rats from the Animal Laboratory at Adnan Menderes University, Faculty of Medicine, were used. Materials and Methods: The rats were randomly divided into the following 3 groups (n = 8 each): only expansion (OE), expansion plus MEL (MEL) and expansion plus CUR (CUR). CUR and MEL were given to the rats during the study period. After the sacrifice of the animals, biochemical, histological and immunohistoche . . .mical examinations were performed. Results: Serum bone alkaline phosphatase levels in the MEL group were statistically (P =.007) higher than in the OE group. Serum glutathione peroxidase and catalase activities in the CUR and MEL groups were significantly higher than in the OE group (P =.007 and P =.021, respectively). Inflammatory cell infiltration, new bone formation and capillary intensity parameters did not demonstrate statistically significant differences between the groups (P =.865, P =.067 and P =.055, respectively). The immunohistochemical findings revealed that IL-1, IL-6 and TNF-? H scores showed considerable differences between the groups (all P Daha fazlası Daha az

Pollution Havens and Their Relationship to the Environmental Kuznets Curve: The Case of the us Tyre Industry

McCollough J. | He M. | Bayramoglu A.T.

Article | 2016 | Economic Affairs36 ( 3 ) , pp.258 - 272

The Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis suggests that, as a country's national income grows, environmental degradation subsides as the population demands a cleaner environment. On the other hand, critics of the Environmental Kuznets Curve claim that many polluting industries simply relocate offshore, where environmental compliance is less costly. They then export their products back to their previous home countries. This is known as the Pollution Haven hypothesis. This article demonstrates how pollution havens can falsely give the appearance of an Environmental Kuznets Curve by analysing lead emissions from the US automotive tyre . . . manufacturing industry. © 2016 Institute of Economic Affair Daha fazlası Daha az

Öncü E. | Kaymaz E.

Article | 2017 | Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research19 ( 6 ) , pp.1009 - 1014

Background: The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of Platelet rich fibrin (PRF) treatment of maxillary sinus membrane perforation on bone formation and new vascular supply and the success of dental implant survival rate. Methods: The dataset for this retrospective study consists of patients who received sinus augmentation using the lateral wall technique. A total of 16 patients (20 sinuses) the patients without sinus membrane perforation (10 maxiller sinus area with sinus floor augmentation) and with Schneiderian perforation (10 maxiller sinus area repairing with PRF and augmented sinus floor area) were included in t . . .his study. The bone height was measured by comparing the preoperative and postoperative dental CBCT scans. Histological sections were evaluated for possible vasculogenesis augmented sinuses area. Results: In both groups, it was observed that the possible vasculogenesis augmented sinuses area increased. Implant survival rates in both groups found that one hundred percent and any bone loss around implants were not observed. An apparent increase in alveolar bone height was observed and measured in CBCT scans. Conclusions: PRF can be considered as an alternative material for repairing sinus perforations because it is fully autogenous and easy manipulated. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc Daha fazlası Daha az

Attitudes to ageing and their relationship with quality of life in older adults in Turkey

Korkmaz Aslan G. | Kulakçı AltıntaŞ H. | Özen Çınar İ. | Veren F.

Article | 2019 | Psychogeriatrics19 ( 2 ) , pp.157 - 164

Aim: With the increase in life expectancy, it has become necessary to expand our knowledge of how older individuals perceive their own ageing and how ageing affects their quality of life. The aim of the study was to determine older adults’ attitudes towards ageing and the relationship between attitudes and quality of life among community-dwelling older adults in Turkey. Methods: This cross-sectional and correlational study was conducted in Zonguldak, Turkey. The sample included 999 community-dwelling older adults, who were selected from five family health centres. The data were collected between April and June 2015 by using the Atti . . .tudes to Aging Questionnaire and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument-Older Adults Module. A hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted to test the predictive value of attitude to ageing on quality of life. Results: Multiple regression analysis revealed that the subscales of Attitudes to Ageing Questionnaire (psychosocial loss (ß = -0.289), physical change (ß = 0.296), and psychological growth (ß = 0.279)) were statistically significant predictors of quality of life. Attitudes to ageing explained 46.6% of the quality of life among community-dwelling older adults in Turkey (R 2 = 0.466). Conclusion: The significant impact of attitudes to ageing on quality of life suggests the need for better recognition of attitudes to ageing in older adults. © 2018 Japanese Psychogeriatric Societ Daha fazlası Daha az

Article | 2008 | Journal of Sexual Medicine5 ( 11 ) , pp.2600 - 2609

Introduction. Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) may have a significant negative effect on sexual function. Aim. To evaluate female sexual function in women with OSAHS. Methods. Twenty-six patients with OSAHS were evaluated in two groups according to apnea-hypopnea index as mild (5-15, Group I, N=16) or moderate-severe (?15, Group II, N=10). A third group (N=10) of patients suspected of sleeping disorders other than OSAHS who also underwent polysomnographic studies served as the control group. All women were evaluated with a detailed sexual history including Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire and Beck D . . .epression Inventory (BDI). Meanwhile, serum levels of estradiol, prolactin, total and free testosterone and dihydroepiandrostenedione-S were determined. Main Outcome Measures. FSFI, BDI, and serum hormonal levels. Results. The mean ages and total FSFI scores of Group I, Group II and the control group were 46 ± 7.1, 45 ± 3.8, and 41 ± 5.4 (P >0.05); 24.7 ± 5.3, 24. 5± 6.3, and 30.0 ± 2.5 (P < 0.05), respectively. The mean FSFI domain scores were not statistically different between Groups I and II (P > 0.05) (desire, 3.18 ± 1.2 vs. 2.92 ± 1.6; arousal, 3.96 ± 1.1 vs. 3.67 ± 1.2; lubrication, 4.83 ± 1.0 vs. 4.12 ± 1.1; orgasm 4.0 ± 1.1 vs. 5.15 ± 2.9; satisfaction 3.96±1.1 vs. 4.05 ± 1.4 pain; 4.84±1.2 vs. 4.65 ± 1.3). However, the mean scores of desire (3.18 ± 1.2 vs. 3.96 ± 0.7), orgasm (4.0 ± 1.1 vs. 5.0 ± 1.1), and satisfaction (3.96 ± 1.1 vs. 4.76 ± 1.0) domains of Group I were significantly lower than the control group. Meanwhile, the mean scores of desire (2.92 ± 1.6 vs. 3.96 ± 0.7) and lubrication (4.12 ± 1.1 vs. 5.22 ± 0.9) domains were statistically different between Group II and the control group. The mean BDI scores of patients in Group I, Group II and the control group were 19.3 ± 6.3, 20.2 ± 6.6, and 11.0 ± 7.1, respectively (P0.05). Conclusions. OSAHS is associated with a significant decrease in female sexual function. However, severity of OSAHS is not related with the degree of female sexual dysfunction (FSD). This situation reveals that both organic and psychogenic issues are being involved in FSD related with OSAHS. Onem K, Erol B, Sanli O, Kadioglu P, Yalin AS, Canik U, Cuhadaroglu C, and Kadioglu A. Article | 2015 | BJU International116 ( 5 ) , pp.721 - 726

Objectives To evaluate the effect of the interval between the initial and second transurethral resection (TUR) on the outcome of patients with high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) treated with maintenance intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) therapy. Patients and Methods We reviewed the data of patients from 10 centres treated for high-risk NMIBC between 2005 and 2012. Patients without a diagnosis of muscle-invasive cancer on second TUR performed ?90 days after a complete first TUR, and received at least 1 year of maintenance BCG were included in this study. The interval between first and second TUR in additio . . .n to other parameters were recorded. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify predictors of recurrence and progression. Results In all, 242 patients were included. The mean (sd, range) follow-up was 29.4 (22.2, 12-96) months. The 3-year recurrence- and progression-free survival rates of patients who underwent second TUR between 14 and 42 days and 43-90 days were 73.6% vs 46.2% (P < 0.001) and 89.1% vs 79.1% (P = 0.006), respectively. On multivariate analysis, the interval to second TUR was found to be a predictor of both recurrence [odds ratio (OR) 3.598, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.885-8.137; P = 0.001] and progression (OR 2.144, 95% CI 1.447-5.137; P = 0.003). Conclusions The interval between first and second TUR should be ?42 days in order to attain lower recurrence and progression rates. To our knowledge, this is the first study demonstrating the effect of the interval between first and second TUR on patient outcomes. © 2015 The Authors BJU International © 2015 BJU International Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd Daha fazlası Daha az

A comparison of a 5% potassium hydroxide solution with a 5-fluorouracil and salicylic acid combination in the treatment of patients with anogenital warts: A randomized, open-label clinical trial

Article | 2014 | International Journal of Dermatology53 ( 9 ) , pp.1145 - 1150

Anogenital warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), over 30 types of which are infectious for the anogenital tract. Without treatment, warts may regress spontaneously, remain unchanged, or increase in number and size. This study compared the efficacy of a topical 5% potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution with that of a topical 0.5% 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and 10% salicylic acid (SA) combination in the treatment of anogenital warts. Sixty patients were randomly assigned to receive topical KOH or 5-FU + SA. Both groups demonstrated a significant decrease in numbers of lesions (P < 0.05), but this difference was not significant at wee . . .k 12 (P > 0.05). The mean number of lesions decreased from baseline to week 12 from 17.03 ± 12.64 to 3.73 ± 7.30 and from 16.13 ± 12.97 to 3.10 ± 4.90 in the KOH and 5-FU + SA groups, respectively (P < 0.001). Excellent clearance was achieved by 70.0 and 76.7% of patients in the KOH and 5-FU + SA groups, respectively. Marked improvement was seen in 13.3 and 20.0% of patients in the KOH and 5-FU + SA groups, respectively. At week 16, relapse was observed in two patients in the KOH group and three in the 5-FU + SA group (P > 0.05). No serious adverse events were reported. Neither treatment was more efficacious. Safety and ease of application are important goals in treatments for anogenital warts. A 5% KOH solution is a promising alternative treatment because it is effective and inexpensive and causes minimal side effects. © 2014 The International Society of Dermatology Daha fazlası Daha az

Article | 2015 | Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry27 ( 5 ) , pp.314 - 321

Statement of the Problem Mouthrinses can cause discoloration on indirect resin composites. Purpose of the Study The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of different mouthrinses on the color changes and surface roughness of a laboratory-processed composite. Methods and Materials Fifty discs were made using GC Gradia/GC indirect composites and divided into five groups which immersed in artificial saliva and four different types of mouthrinses. The samples were immersed daily for 14 days in 20mL of the solutions for 2 minutes twice a day (with a 12-hour interval between exposures). Measurements were carried out at four d . . .ifferent times: 1 hour after sample preparation (t0), 1 day (t1), 7 days (t2), and 14 days (t3) after the first immersion in the solutions. The color before and after immersion was measured according to Comission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE L*, a*, b*) System and ?L*, ?a*, ?b*, and ?E* values were calculated. The surface roughness Ra (µm) of the specimens was evaluated using a profilometer. Results There were significant differences between the groups at all time representing ?E values (p<0.001). At (t1) time representing ?Ra value, there were significant differences between the groups (p<0.05). At (t2, t3) time representing ?Ra values, there were significant differences between the groups (p<0.001). Pharmol Zn immersed specimens showed ?E values between 1.04 and 3.67. Conclusions The result of this study indicated that the mouthrinses affected the color stability of indirect composites. Clinical Significance Based on the results of this study, patients with resin composite restorations should be warned by the dentists about the discoloration of the restorations and the time period of the mouthrinse that will be used. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc Daha fazlası Daha az

Article | 2019 | Psychogeriatrics , pp.314 - 321

Background: This study was performed to determine the prevalence of elder abuse among community-dwelling older adults and its associated risk factors. Methods: The sample in this cross-sectional study consisted of 691 older adults. Data were collected with an elder abuse and neglect assessment form, which had been prepared by the researchers in accordance with the literature. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors related to subtypes of elder abuse. Results: In this study, 13.6% of the elderly subjects (n = 94) were exposed to at least one instance of abusive behaviour within the last year; emotional abuse was the . . . most frequently occurring type of abuse. Risk factors for abuse were being 75 years old or older (odds ratio (OR) = 1.993, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.105–3.592), being illiterate (OR = 4.863, 95%CI: 2.809–8.417), lack of own income (OR = 2.189, 95%CI: 1.179–4.064), having bad family relationships (OR = 20.564, 95%CI: 5.453–77.554), and lack of own home (OR = 3.945,; 95%CI: 1.167–13.330). Conclusions: The results of this study showed that abuse was an important problem for the elderly population. Therefore, elderly individuals, especially those who are 75 years old or older, have a low education level, lack their own home, and lack their own income, should be evaluated for abuse. © 2019 Japanese Psychogeriatric Societ Daha fazlası Daha az
