Radiologic aspects of abdominal hydatidosis in children - A study of 31 cases in Turkey

Erdem, LO | Erdem, CZ | Karlioguz, K | Uner, C

Article | 2004 | CLINICAL IMAGING28 ( 3 ) , pp.196 - 200

Objective: To determine the location and radiological characteristics in children with abdominal hydatid disease (HD). Materials and methods: Thirty-one children (average age: 7.2 years) with abdominal HD were studied. The number, location, diameter and internal architecture of the cysts were assessed with abdominal ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT). Density measurements and enhancement patterns were determined on CT. Results: Twenty-one children had hepatic HD. The remaining 10 children had both hepatic and extrahepatic cysts. There were splenic cysts in five children, peritoneal cysts in two children and combined s . . .plenic and peritoneal cysts in three children. The most common site of the cysts was the liver (64%), followed by the spleen (20%) and the peritoneal cavity (16%). The seven intraabdominal cysts, which were not detected by US, were 20 min or less in diameter. Conclusion: CT may demonstrate additional small intrahepatic or unsuspected extrahepatic cysts. Although rare, splenic or peritoneal hydatidosis should be included in the differential diagnosis of a cystic splenic or peritoneal lesion. Familiarity with atypical locations of HD may be helpful in making a prompt, accurate diagnosis. We think that in particular patients, especially those who had diagnostic problem and who are under surgical planning, CT should be performed additionally. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. Article | 2008 | JOURNAL OF HEART AND LUNG TRANSPLANTATION27 ( 1 ) , pp.135 - 137

Severe pulmonary hypertension is a risk factor for mortality in heart transplantation due to elevated post-operative right heart failure. Various treatment modalities have been used in the management of pulmonary hypertension in the peri-operative period. We report a case of successful management of acute right heart failure after orthotopic heart transplantation by decompression of the right ventricle through the patent foramen ovale of the donor heart and inhalation of iloprost.

Intravesical Prostatic Protrusion: A Potential Marker of Alpha-blocker Treatment Success in Patients With Benign Prostatic Enlargement

OBJECTIVE To investigate the value of anatomic and blood-flow measurements of the prostate via ultrasound in identifying medical treatment response of patients with lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic enlargement. A secondary objective of the study was to compare transabdominal-transrectal measurements. MATERIALS AND METHODS Male patients (age range 50-80) with lower urinary tract symptoms who applied to our outpatient clinic to be diagnosed with benign prostatic enlargement that were eligible for medical management were included in the prospective study. Patients (n = 49) were administered with tamsulosin for manag . . .ement. At baseline evaluation, all patients underwent International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), prostate-specific antigen (PSA), transabdominal and transrectal ultrasound [prostate volume (PV), post-void rezidu and intravesical prostatic protrusion (IPP)], and prostate subcapsular resistive index value measurement. Follow-ups were carried out 1 and 3 months after treatment. At these time-points, patients were assessed with IPSS and uroflowmetry. RESULTS IPP were identified to be negatively correlated with baseline Qmax values (P =.001, R = -0.485) and positively correlated with PSA (P = .013, R = 0.353) and PV (P = .003, R = 0.420). PV was related with resistive index (P = .026, R = 0.318) and PSA (P = .001, R = 0.619). Subsequent to medical treatment on the follow-ups, an overall improvement in the IPSS and Qmax was identified (P = .001). However, a negative correlation was identified in the change that occurred between IPSS and IPP (P = .004, R = -0.410). Other parameters were not correlated (P > .05) with the change in IPSS and Qmax. Transabdominal and transrectal measures were similar (P = .001). CONCLUSION This study has shown that increased IPP values are associated with lower response to alphareceptor specific management. Transabdominal measurements are sufficient for the evaluation compared with transrectal measurement. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc Daha fazlası Daha az

Objective: To assess the glucose intolerance and the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis in the first-degree relatives (FDRs) of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Design: Clinical study of the female FDRs of patients with PCOS. Setting: Outpatients at endocrinology department of a university hospital. Patient(s): Seventy FDRs of PCOS patients and 20 healthy women were evaluated. Intervention(S): Basal hormonal investigations, buserelin test, and 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) were performed. Main Outcome Measure(s): Basal hormone levels were measured. Additionally, insulinogenic index, glucose and insulin . . . responses to OGTT, and FSH, LH, E-2, and 17-OHP responses to buserelin test were obtained. Result(S): Four (5.7%) of the FDRs showed impaired glucose tolerance, and the FDRs had significantly higher fasting plasma glucose (P Daha fazlası Daha az

Fracture Resistance of Teeth with Simulated Perforating Internal Resorption Cavities Repaired with Different Calcium Silicate-based Cements and Backfilling Materials

Turker, Sevinc Aktemur | Uzunoglu, Emel | Sungur, Derya Deniz | Tek, Vildan

Article | 2018 | JOURNAL OF ENDODONTICS44 ( 5 ) , pp.860 - 863

Introduction: This study assessed the fracture resistance (FR) of teeth with simulated perforating internal resorption cavities repaired with different calcium silicate based cements (CSCs) and backfilling materials. Methods: Ninety-six mandibular premolar teeth were used. Twelve of the teeth were assigned as negative control group. Remaining roots were instrumented with rotary files, and standardized internal resorption cavities were prepared on the middle half of roots with burs. Twelve of the samples were not further interfered and were assigned as a positive control group. The apical 4 mm of the remaining 72 root canals was obtu . . .rated with single-cone technique and divided into 6 groups according to CSCs used for repairing of cavities and backfilling materials as follows: MTA + MTA, MTA + gutta-percha/sealer, Biodentine + Biodentine, Biodentine + gutta-percha/sealer, MTA Plus + MTA Plus, and MTA Plus + gutta-percha/sealer. Specimens were embedded in acrylic resin and then subjected to fracture testing. The forces when the fracture occurred were analyzed with analysis of variance and Bonferroni tests at P = .05. Results: No significant difference was found among CSCs irrespective of backfilling materials (P > .05). Groups MTA + gutta-percha/sealer, Biodentine + gutta-percha/sealer, and MTA Plus + gutta-percha/sealer showed significantly lower FR compared with groups MTA + MTA, Biodentine + Biodentine, and MTA Plus + MTA Plus, respectively (P < .05). The highest FR was observed in group Biodentine + Biodentine, and the lowest was in group MTA Plus + gutta-percha/sealer. FR of positive control group was statistically lower than groups completely filled with CSCs (P < .05), whereas FR of negative control group was statistically higher than the groups combined with gutta-percha and sealer (P < .05). Conclusions: The backfilling with CSCs may be a preferable material rather than gutta-percha/sealer combination for the roots with perforated internal resorptions Daha fazlası Daha az
