Makale | 2013 | Urologic Oncology: Seminars and Original Investigations31 ( 3 ) , pp.386 - 391

Background: Testicular self-examination is the easiest and cheapest way to scan testicular cancer. However, the public awareness about testicular self-examination is very low. We aimed to investigate the public awareness of Turkish people about testicular cancer and testicular self-examination. Methods: We performed a survey consisting of 10 questions concerning testicular cancer and testicular self-examination in 799 students in the first year of 12 different medical schools. Aiming for a common method of data collection, the questionnaires were administered to the students during a class just before the lesson started. The whole d . . .ata from all of the centers were pooled in a common data-base file. Results: Eighty-nine (11.1%) of the participants reported that they had knowledge about testicular cancer, but only 11 (1.4%) of them answered all the questions about testicular cancer correctly. Eight (1%) of the participants reported that they had been performing testicular self-examination routinely once a month. Four (0.5%) of them were both well informed about testicular cancer and had been performing testicular self-examination once a month as suggested. Conclusion: The present study showed that awareness on testicular cancer and testicular self-examination is very low and suggests a need for efforts in Turkey to increase public awareness and education. © 2013 Elsevier Inc Daha fazlası Daha az

Makale | 2013 | PHYSICAL REVIEW D88 ( 9 ) , pp.386 - 391

We have examined TeV scale effects of extra spatial dimensions through the processes gamma q -> gamma q, where q = u, d, c, s, b, (u) over bar, (d) over bar, (c) over bar, (s) over bar, (b) over bar. These processes have been treated in a photon-proton collision via the main reaction pp -> p gamma p -> p gamma qX at the LHC. We have employed the equivalent photon approximation for incoming photon beams and performed statistical analysis for various forward detector acceptances.

Bahbah S. | Golden B.W. | Roseler K. | Elderle P. | Saka Y. | Shoutherland S.A.

Makale | 2013 | International Education Studies6 ( 1 ) , pp.117 - 131

This study explores in-service elementary and secondary science teachers' conceptions of the Nature of Scientific Inquiry and the influence of participation in two different Research Experience for Teacher (RET) programs had on these conceptions. Participant teachers attended one of two six week RET programs in which they worked with scientists to engage in scientific inquiry. Before and after the RETs, teachers completed the Views of Scientific Inquiry (VOSI) questionnaire. Teachers' answers were analyzed to determine the degree of sophistication of their understanding of five facets of scientific inquiry. Both elementary and secon . . .dary teacher participants showed improvement in their understanding of nature of scientific inquiry as a result of program participation, and both programs were successful in supporting the development of inquiry conceptions, although secondary science teachers started and finished the RET's with a more sophisticated understandings of scientific inquiry. Areas of improvement for elementary teachers included the role of questions in science and the role subjectivity and creativity play in the processes of science, and for secondary teachers growth was seen in the role of questions, the relationship of data and evidence, the distinction of experiments and other means of investigations, and the varied methods of science. Implications of these results are discussed Daha fazlası Daha az

PP-wave solutions of the Weyl-Yang theory of gravity with a five-dimensional Kaluza-Klein ansatz

Kuyrukcu H.

Makale | 2013 | Classical and Quantum Gravity30 ( 15 ) , pp.117 - 131

A Yang-Mills-type quadratic gravity model is considered in the framework of a five-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory. Field equations and stress-energy tensors are presented in differential forms. A five-dimensional classical Kaluza-Klein metric ansatz is investigated, which consists of a four-dimensional plane-fronted gravitational wave with parallel rays as its sub-metric along with a non-trivial dilaton and gauge fields. It is found that the solution is equivalent to plane-gravitational waves in terms of a spin-0 dilaton and a spin-1 photon. Some special cases are discussed, and it is shown that only the plane-electromagnetic waves . . . with helicity-1 states carried non-zero energy-momentum. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd Daha fazlası Daha az

Warm and harsh parenting as mediators of the relation between maternal and adolescent emotion regulation

Saritaş D. | Grusec J.E. | Gençöz T.

Makale | 2013 | Journal of Adolescence36 ( 6 ) , pp.1093 - 1101

Maternal hostility/rejection and warmth were considered as potential mediators of the relation between mothers' and adolescents' emotion regulation. Participants were first-year high school students living in Ankara, Turkey and their mothers (N=365). Scales assessing emotion regulation difficulties and maternal hostility/rejection and warmth were administered to both the adolescents and their mothers. Maternal hostility/rejection, but not warmth, mediated the relation between maternal and adolescent emotion regulation. For girls there was, additionally, a direct effect of maternal emotion regulation. The different roles played by pa . . .rental rejection and parental warmth in the development of adolescents' emotion regulation accord with arguments that socialization occurs in different domains and that rejection and warmth are not aspects of the same domain. © 2013 The Foundation for Professionals in Services for Adolescents Daha fazlası Daha az

Three dimensional numerical rock damage analysis under blasting load

Yilmaz O. | Unlu T.

Makale | 2013 | Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology38 , pp.266 - 278

In this study, the behaviour of rock mass subjected to blasting load is investigated using three dimensional finite difference numerical modelling. In the analyses, Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion has been used for the characterisation of the rock mass strength. Stresses acting on the borehole boundary have been simulated by an exponential function which reaches its maximum within a short time and then falls to zero value in a considerable period. The strain rate effect on the mechanical properties of rock material has also been taken into account in the analyses. Different explosive and site conditions have been studied to investiga . . .te the effects of loading rate and anisotropic high in situ stresses on blasting performance and blast induced damage zones. Results have shown that the most efficient explosive in rock blasting will be the one with low frequency content but with a sufficiently high borehole wall pressure. In addition, it has been verified that the directions and the magnitudes of major principle stresses affect the development of the crack zone around the borehole. Finally, it has been seen that proposed equation for the dynamic compressive strength of rock material fits very well to general suggestions. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd Daha fazlası Daha az

Juniper smoke, skulls and wolves' tails. The Epipalaeolithic of the Anatolian plateau in its South-west Asian context; insights from Pinarbaşi

Baird D. | Asouti E. | Astruc L. | Baysal A. | Baysal E. | Carruthers D. | Fairbairn A.

Makale | 2013 | Levant45 ( 2 ) , pp.175 - 209

This paper discusses the only substantive evidence for the Epipalaeolithic of central Anatolia. This evidence allows revised understandings of phenomena often proposed as characteristic of the Epipalaeolithic of South-west Asia including the appearance of sedentism, a putative Broad Spectrum Revolution, intensive plant exploitation and the emergence of distinctive ritual and symbolic practices. It also allows further evaluation of the effect of Late Glacial climate change on human behaviours.

Comparison of drilling performance of chisel and button bits on the electro hydraulic driller

Su O. | Yarali O. | Akcin N.A.

Makale | 2013 | Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering46 ( 6 ) , pp.1577 - 1587

Electro hydraulic drillers have been widely used in mining for drilling and roof-bolting. In the drilling process, the performance of the machine is predicted by selecting an appropriate bit type prior to drilling operations. In this paper, a series of field drilling studies were conducted in order to examine and compare the performance of chisel and button bits including wear on the bits. The effects of taper angle on chisel bits, which are at angles of 105, 110 and 120, were investigated in terms of rate of penetration, instantaneous drilling rate and specific energy. The results of drilling and abrasivity tests performed in the l . . .aboratory supported the outcome of the field studies. Based on laboratory studies and field observations, it was proven that the conglomerate encountered, though it is very abrasive, is easy to drill. The cutter life in the encountered series is also longer in sandstone formation compared to the conglomerate. Additionally, button bits resulted in lower specific energy and higher penetration rates relative to chisel bits, regardless of their taper angles. The results were also supported with statistical analyses. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Wien Daha fazlası Daha az

Performance of artificial neural networks on Kriging method in modeling local geoid [Desempenho das redes neurais artificiais sobre o método da Krigagem no modelamento do geóide local]

Akcin H. | Celik C.T.

Makale | 2013 | Boletim de Ciencias Geodesicas19 ( 1 ) , pp.84 - 97

Transformation of ellipsoidal heights determined by satellite techniques into local leveling heights requires geoid heights at points of interest. However, the geoid heights at each point are not available. In order to determine them, the local geoid in the transformation area must be modeled or computed by an appropriate method, one way of doing it, is to use control points both of whose ellipsoidal and local leveling heights are available. In this study, performance of geoid by ANN compared to Kriging method in modeling local geoid was presented. Moreover, the transformation ability of the methods was investigated through a geodet . . .ic test network in Bursa Metropolitan Area of Turkey. The results suggest that the model by ANN exhibit better results than the one by Kriging Method Daha fazlası Daha az

Screening for patients with mild Alzheimer disease using frequency doubling technology perimetry

Aykan U. | Akdemir M.O. | Yildirim O. | Varlibas F.

Konferans nesnesi | 2013 | Neuro-Ophthalmology37 ( 6 ) , pp.239 - 246

We compared the visual field performances of patients with mild Alzheimer disease (AD) with normal subjects and detected visual field impairment attributable to the magnocellular pathway using frequency doubling technology - Matrix (FDT-Matrix). We recruited 43 patients with mild AD (mean age: 68.0±7.2 years) and 33 controls who are visually and cognitively normal (mean age: 64.1±6.4 years). All participants had at least two reliable FDT-Matrix 30-2 tests. Reliability indices, global indices (mean deviation and pattern standard deviation), and glaucoma hemifield test results were measured with FDT-Matrix. The mean test duration was . . .significantly longer in patient group compared with controls (p=0.002). Among the reliability indices, false negatives were higher in patient group than controls (p=0.003). There were statistically significant differences in mean deviation and pattern standard deviation values ( Daha fazlası Daha az

Assessment of color Doppler ultrasonography findings in gynecomastia

Yuksekkaya R. | Celikyay F. | Ozcetin M. | Yuksekkaya M. | Asan Y.

Makale | 2013 | Medical Ultrasonography15 ( 4 ) , pp.285 - 288

Aim: To evaluate the color Doppler ultrasound (US) findings of gynecomastia and compare them with sonographic Tanner staging to determine an additional diagnostic tool. Patients and methods: Eighteen male (mean age 13.87 ± 1.72) patients (36 breasts) with breast enlargement were examined with gray-scale and color Doppler ultrasound (US), and these were used to determine the Tanner stages. In addition, the arterial and venous flow scores were assessed. The resistivity index (RI) values were also measured at the medial, lateral, and retroareolar regions of the breasts, and the mean RI values for each breast were then calculated. Resul . . .ts: Gynecomastia was detected in 30 breasts, and the mean retroareolar thickness was 8.03 mm. Furthermore, arterial and venous flows were detected in 73.3% and 56.7% of the breasts, respectively. However, there was no correlation between the arterial and venous flows and the retroareolar glandular tissue thickness. The average of the mean RI values of the three regions of the breast was 0.62, and there was a statistically significantly positive correlation between the mean RI values of the breasts and the Tanner stages as established by US. Furthermore, there was a strongly significant positive correlation between the arterial and venous flow scores and the Tanner stages. Conclusions: Our research indicates that vascularity is correlated with breast development in patients with gynecomastia. Additionally, we determined that RI values might be as important as Tanner stages on US Daha fazlası Daha az
