Physical and mechanical properties of composite cements

Yuksel, Isa | Ozkan, Omer

Makale | 2009 | ZKG INTERNATIONAL62 ( 12 )

This paper reports on the results of an experimental study conducted to evaluate the physical properties and strength development of composite cements manufactured with a steel slag (SS) and blast-furnace slag (BFS) combination. The influence of the proportions and fineness of the slag on the compressive strength of the cement blends are presented. Test results showed that the physical properties of the composite Portland cement series were affected by the BFS-SS substitution. The BFS-SS combination used for replacement gave better results when they were ground finer than the Portland cement clinker. The increase in Blame fineness o . . .f the BFS-SS combination had a positive effect on the compressive strength. The Substitution ratio can be raised to 60 to 80% provided the slag fineness value is 4600 cm(2)/g Daha fazlası Daha az

Case report: Hyponatremia and generalized convulsion after intravenous oxytocin infusion

Makale | 2009 | Journal of the Turkish German Gynecology Association10 ( 1 ) , pp.47 - 48

Most patients with drug-induced hyponatraemia are asymptomatic and the diagnosis is made incidentally following routine blood tests. Mild cases may be managed either by stopping the drug or by careful observation if the drug is considered essential. Severe hyponatremia (serum sodium levels less than 120 mmol/l) is associated with increased morbidity and mortality (confusion, convulsions, coma, congestive heart failure e.g.). We present a case of severe water intoxication with convulsion and prolonged coma, following the use of a high dose syntocinon infusion. A 22-year-old female who has intrauterine anencephalic fetus was refered t . . .o our hospital. Intravenous oxytocin was used to induce first-trimester abortion, eight hours later generalized tonic-clonic seizures occured and coma followed. Hyponatremia was found as the cause and treated by intravenous infusion of hypertonic 3% NaCl. The patient recovered and no seizure observed on follow-up. The central nervous system manifestations of acute hyponatremia may be related to cerebral edema. Drugs administration and electrolyte disturbances should be remembered as causes of coma and seizure in obstetric patients Daha fazlası Daha az

John Stuart Mill on justice in property

John Stuart Mill is one of the most influential philosophers and political economists within the history of economic thought. Besides being an avant-garde utilitarian, his Principles of Political Economy dominated the political economy domain for more than a quarter of a century. As a utilitarian, he believed that a concept of justice which is grounded in utility is the most sacred and binding part of morality, and that the proper principles of justice are those which tend to have the best consequences. Justice, at the same time, implies something that an individual can claim as his or her legal and moral right. If this right is an exclusive disposal by an individual of a product created by his or her own efforts, or of a good received by its producer by fair agreement, it constitutes the institution of property. In this paper, J.S. Mill's views regarding private property are elaborated in the light of his perceptions of utility and justice. This exploration will allow us to bring together the views on justice and property of a utilitarian on the one hand, and a classical economist influenced by socialism on the other Daha fazlası Daha az

Natural durability of heartwoods from European and tropical Africa trees exposed to marine conditions

Sen, Selim | Sivrikaya, Hueseyin | Yalcin, Mesut

Makale | 2009 | AFRICAN JOURNAL OF BIOTECHNOLOGY8 ( 18 ) , pp.4425 - 4432

Marine durability of heartwoods obtained from tropical African and European species against marine borer attacks in underwater exposure in Turkish coasts was investigated. Test hangers including wood species of 18 European and 15 African wood species were fastened to test area and exposed at a depth of 6 m along the coasts of seas (East and West Black Sea, Marmara Sea, Aegean, East and West coasts of mediterranean in Turkey seashore). Most European wood samples suffered severe attacks from boring organisms. On the other hand, some tropical African species (Lophira alata, Nauclea diderichii, Tieghemella heckelii, Chlorophora excelsa, . . . Distemonanthus benthamianus, Pterocarpus soyauxii and Millettia laurentii) showed high natural marine durability in all seas, while the rest of them were only slightly degraded by boring organisms. The test areas in Trabzon, Eregli and iskenderun cities which are industrial harbours were shown to have the highest boring attacks. Other test areas, Bandirma, Alacati and Finike which are yacht marinas were shown to have little boring and fouling attacks Daha fazlası Daha az

. .in bileşenlerinin fonksiyonları arasındaki ayırımı öğrencilerin kavrayamadıkları tespit edilmiştir. This study presents conceptual problems of high school students with respect to the cell, its process, structure and relation to the functuals of multice-llular organisms. A pretest assesment was administered to students at the begi-ning of cell lesson in order to find out their prior knowledge, misconceptions and learning difficulties on the topic of cell biology. The different cell components can be regarded as the elementary units of a cell. The strateggy used by the teacher involves focussing the students attention by showing an elarged image of the relevant parts of the cell. Prior to the posttest assessment, students were gave lecture with power point presentation through computer. "Laboratory work followed the lectures. Results imply that these conceptual problems are mainly due to students' lack of differantiation among functions of cell components Daha fazlası Daha az

ALTERNATIVE METHODS FOR IMPROVING TRANSFORMATION CONSISTENCY BETWEEN GEOCENTRIC AND NON-GEOCENTRIC (LOCAL) COORDINATE SYSTEMS

Kutoglu, H. S.

Makale | 2009 | SURVEY REVIEW41 ( 314 ) , pp.408 - 418

Today, GPS is the most popular surveying technique used in determination of geodetic networks, Using this technique, one can obtain point coordinates in a geocentric coordinate system. On the other hand, geodetic frameworks in many countries are referenced to local coordinate systems. Therefore, geodesists often come across transformation problems between geocentric and local coordinate systems. The 7-parameter similarity, transformation method, which reveals the real geometrical relationship between terrestrial coordinate systems, is usually the basic solution to this problem. However, this method may not always provide a transform . . .ation with a good consistency when the existing coordinates in local systems are distorted. In this case, alternative methods to the basic solution should be introduced to acquire a better consistency,. For this purpose, the polynomial method is the most common alternative in practice. In this study, two other methods, namely, the least square filtering and the artificial neural network methods, are introduced into the transformation problem. These three methods ore investigated using the data composed of the point coordinates in ITRF94 and ED50 frames which are located in the city of Istanbul in Turkey. This investigation, carried out with respect to various criteria, shows that the Most consistent results are obtained by the artificial neural network method Daha fazlası Daha az

Effect of various factors on the rigidity of furniture cases

Tunay, Metin | Tankut, Nurgul

Makale | 2009 | AFRICAN JOURNAL OF BIOTECHNOLOGY8 ( 20 ) , pp.5265 - 5270

Cases are one of the most important types of furniture produced, yet relatively little research has been done on the case rigidity. In this study, types of the fastener properties to overall case rigidity were investigated along with the effect of material type and thickness on stiffness. A total of sixteen cases were constructed and tested. Results indicated that panel thickness and material type significantly increased structural stiffness of case type furniture. The results of experiments showed that the stiffness of case furniture could be increased by increasing the material thickness from 16 to 18 mm. Medium density fiberboard . . . (MDF) cases, in both doweled and screwed ones, were stiffer than particleboard cases. Results indicated that the stiffness of case furniture could be increased by increasing the stiffness of corner joints, e. g. by using screw with glue instead of using only screw or applying glue to the dowels and whole edges instead of dowels only. Case furniture designs using screws with glue resulted in higher case stiffness than similar designs using glued dowel joints. In general, the stiffer the end connection, the less the deflection of the case was observed. The results also indicated that rigidity of case furniture comes mainly from the gluing of the joining surfaces. Therefore, knowing the rigidity of the case furniture made of wood composites is fundamental to the design of safe, cost efficient and aesthetic design Daha fazlası Daha az

Influence of smoking on human milk tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1 beta, and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 levels at postpartum seventh day

Ermis, Bahri | Yildirim, Abdulkadir | Tastekin, Ayhan | Ors, Rahmi

Makale | 2009 | PEDIATRICS INTERNATIONAL51 ( 6 ) , pp.821 - 824

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of maternal smoking during pregnancy on human milk interleukin-1 beta, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 levels at the postpartum seventh day. Methods: Forty-four mothers (age range: 21-34 years) were enrolled in the study. Mothers were interviewed and classified according to their smoking status into one of two groups: the smoking mothers (n = 21) and the nonsmoking mothers (n = 23). Results: There were no significant differences between study groups with respect to human milk interleukin-1 beta (P = 0.12) and soluble . . . vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 levels (P = 0.83). However, TNF-alpha levels were found to be significantly lower in the smoking mothers compared with the controls (P = 0.002). Conclusion: This study shows that maternal smoking during pregnancy affects the levels of TNF-alpha in milk. The protective effect of human milk against infections seems to be impaired in smoking mothers Daha fazlası Daha az

Anomalous quartic WW gamma gamma and WWZ gamma couplings through W+ W- Z production in gamma gamma colliders

Sahin, Inanc

Makale | 2009 | JOURNAL OF PHYSICS G-NUCLEAR AND PARTICLE PHYSICS36 ( 7 ) , pp.821 - 824

We find 95% confidence level limits on the anomalous coupling parameters a(0), a(c) and a(n) with an integrated luminosity of 500 fb(-1) and root s = 0.5, 1 and 1.5 TeV energies. We take into account incoming beam polarizations and also the final state polarizations of the gauge bosons in the cross-section calculations to improve the bounds. We show that polarization leads to a significant improvement in the sensitivity limits.
