Zinc, copper and iron concentrations in cerebral cortex of male rats exposed to formaldehyde inhalation

Özen O.A. | Songur A. | Sarsilmaz M. | Yaman M. | Kuş I.

Article | 2003 | Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology17 ( 3 ) , pp.207 - 209

Retrospective cohort studies and clinical findings have suggested effects of formaldehyde exposure on the central nervous system in anatomists, embalmers and pathologists. On the other hand, harmful effects of formaldehyde inhalation on the nervous system are not well documented. The concentrations of elements such as zinc, copper and iron within the cerebral cortex indicate whether physiological conditions are maintained. In this study, adult male albino Wistar rats were exposed to formaldehyde at different concentrations (0; 6.1; 12.2 mg·m-3) and during different periods of time (subacute-subchronic), and body weights were recorde . . .d weekly. Zinc, copper and iron concentrations were measured in the parietal cortex using atomic absorption spectrometry after wet ashing. We conclude that subacute or subchronic exposure to formaldehyde may cause growth retardation and alter zinc, copper and iron levels in the cerebral cortex Daha fazlası Daha az

A molecular mechanics and semiempirical molecular orbital study on the conformation of polynorbornene chains

Yilmaz-Savaşkan, Sevil | Abbasoğlu, Rza | Hazer, Baki

Article | 2003 | Journal of Molecular Modeling9 ( 4 ) , pp.230 - 234

The conformational analysis of polynorbornene (PNB) chains was investigated with the AM1, MM2, AMBER and OPLS methods taking into consideration the possibility of binding of norbornene monomers to each other at various positions, i.e. exo-exo, exo-endo, endo-endo. The chain that is formed by connecting exo-endo positions of the monomers has lower torsional barrier energy than those formed with bonds at other positions and has more flexibility. It is determined that the thredisyndiotactic chain formed by exo-endo addition adopts a helix structure and has a coil shape. The disyndiotactic chain formed by connecting norbornene monomers . . .in mixed type has a linear structure. It is found that the repeat unit conformations of thredisyndiotactic and disyndiotactic chains of PNB are TGTG- and (TGTG-)2, respectively Daha fazlası Daha az

The effects of nitric oxide on the expression of cell adhesion molecules (ICAM-1, UEA-1, and tenascin) in rats with unilateral testicular torsion

Ozturk, H | Buyukbayram, H | Ozdemir, E | Ketani, A | Gurel, A | Onen, A | Otcu, S

Article | 2003 | JOURNAL OF PEDIATRIC SURGERY38 ( 11 ) , pp.1621 - 1627

Background/Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of nitric oxide (NO) on the expression of adhesion molecules in the early course of testicular I-R injury in rats. Methods: Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats were separated into 4 groups, each containing 10 rats. A sham operation was performed in group 1 (control). In group 2 (I-R), after 6 hours of unilateral testicular torsion, 1 -hour detorsion of the testis was performed. In group 3 (I-R/L-NAME), after performing the same surgical procedures as in group 11, L-NAME was given for 30 minutes. In group 4 (I-R/Mol), after performing the same surgical procedure (torsi . . .on and detorsion) as in group 11, molsidomine, an NO donor, was infused for 30 minutes. Then, ipsilateral orchiectomies were performed to measure the tissue levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and NO and to make histologic examination. Results: MDA values and the testicular injury score decreased and NO values increased in the I-R/Mol-treated group compared with other experimental groups. The tenascin expression in the interstitial space and basement membrane of the tubuli seminiferi were milder in the I-R/Mol group compared with that of the I-R and the I-R/L-NAME. The acrosomes of the spermatids in I-R and I-R/L-NAME groups were stained mildly by lectin. In the I-R and I-R/L-NAME groups, the interstitial spaces, basement membrane of the tubuli seminiferi, and sertoli and germinal cells in testicular tissue were stained intensely by ICAM-1. Conclusions: The expression of adhesion molecules such as tenascin, lectin, and ICAM-1 in the totted testicular tissue may be a pathophysiologic sign of inflammation. NO regulates adhesion molecules expression Daha fazlası Daha az

Coskun, U | Gunel, N | Onuk, E | Yilmaz, E | Bayram, O | Yamac, D | Cihan, A

Article | 2003 | NEOPLASMA50 ( 3 ) , pp.210 - 216

In this retrospective study, we evaluated the results of 91 locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) patients (30 patients in stage IIIA-33.0%, 61 patients in stage IIIB-67.0%) who had been treated with different neoadjuvant chemotherapy regimens. Forty-three (47.3%) patients treated with FAC (5-Fluorouracil, doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide) or CA (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin), 33 (36.3%) with FEC (5-Fluorouracil, epirubicin, cyclophosphamide) or CE (cyclophosphamide, epirubicin) and 15 (16.5%) with CMF (cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, 5-Fluorouracil) combination as neoadjuvant setting. Median follow-up duration was 33 (6-116) months i . . .n 91 patients. There was no significant difference in the pretreatment characteristics of patients receiving FAC/CA, FEC/CE and CMF including age, disease stage, menopausal and estrogen/progesteron receptor (ER/PR) status (p > 0.05). In CMF group, no patient was treated with taxan as adjuvant setting. However, ten patients (30.3%) in FEC/CE group and 21 patients (48.8%) in FAC/CA group were treated with taxans. Overall response rate was lower in CMF group (60.0%), when compared to FEC/CE (81.9%) and FAC/CA (91.0%) groups (p < 0.05). Median overall survival (OS) and diseases free survival (DFS) were similar in three groups; 28.0 months (range: 14.8-41.1) and 12.0 months (range: 5.3-18.6) in CMF, 45.0 months (range: 16.8-73.1) and 23.0 months (range: 0.0-48.6) in FEC/CE, 46.0 months (range: 41.1-50.8) and 22.0 months (range: 11.1-32.8) months in FAC/CA groups, respectively (p > 0.05). In conclusion, overall response rates were found to be higher in anthracycline-based combinations than CMF, but these regimens had no additional survival advantage over CMF regimen. Long-term effects of these regimens should be investigated in further randomized trials Daha fazlası Daha az

Progression in acute ischemic stroke: frequency, risk factors and prognosis

Sumer, M | Ozdemir, I | Erturk, O

Article | 2003 | JOURNAL OF CLINICAL NEUROSCIENCE10 ( 2 ) , pp.177 - 180

Background and purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency, possible predictive factors and the prognosis of deteriorating ischemic stroke. Methods: A total of 266 stroke patients who presented within 24 h of onset were enrolled. Clinical deterioration was defined as a decrease of 1 points in the Canadian Neurological Scale (CNS). Rankin Score (RS) was performed at discharge and at six months. Results: Of the 266 patients studied, 26 (9.8%) worsened. Involvement of posterior circulation (odds ratio (OR) 3.16) and noncardioembolic infarction (OR 4.5) were found to be independently associated with neurological wors . . .ening. Death occurred in 19.2% of progressive (P) and in 4.16% of nonprogressive (NP) groups. Functional outcome was worse in the P than in NP patients at discharge and at sixth months. Conclusions: Involvement of posterior circulation and noncardioembolic subtypes of infarct independently affect neurological progression in acute ischemic stroke. Clinical deterioration significantly worsens the prognosis. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved Daha fazlası Daha az

An experimental study of CO2 separation using a silica based composite membrane

Yıldırım, Yılmaz | Hughes, Ronald

Article | 2003 | Process Safety and Environmental Protection: Transactions of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, Part B81 ( 4 ) , pp.257 - 261

In this investigation, the preparation and gas selectivity characteristics of an 'ultrafine' composite ceramic membrane are reported. A dip-coating technique was used to prepare a thin selective membrane on a commercially available ceramic macroporous filter (SCT, France). The permeabilities of H2, N2 and CO2 were measured at temperatures of 25-470°C and average pressures of 1-2 bar. The separation of CO2/N2 binary mixtures was also performed. The separation factors for CO2 were found to be higher than that of the Knudsen separation mechanism at room and high temperature. The potential applications of these membranes to CO2 separati . . .on at these temperatures are discussed on the basis of measured selectivity values Daha fazlası Daha az

Comparison of local anaesthetic effects of tramadol with prilocaine for minor surgical procedures

Altunkaya, H | Ozer, Y | Kargi, E | Babuccu, O

Article | 2003 | BRITISH JOURNAL OF ANAESTHESIA90 ( 3 ) , pp.320 - 322

Background. Recent studies have shown that a local anaesthetic action of tramadol 5% was able to induce a sensory block to pinprick, touch, and cold similar to that of lidocaine 1%. The aim of this study was to compare the local anaesthetic effects of tramadol hydrochloride with prilocaine. Methods. Sixty ASA I or II patients, undergoing excision of the cutaneous lesions under local anaesthesia, were included in the study. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either 1 ml of tramadol 5% (Group T, n=30) or 1 ml of prilocaine 2% (Group P, n=30) intradermally, in a double-blinded fashion. The degree of the burning sensation and pa . . .in at the injection site was documented. Sensory block was assessed 1 min after injection. The patient was asked to report the degree of sensation and to grade touch and pinprick sensation. Two minutes after drug administration, incision was performed and intensity of pain, felt by the patient was evaluated on a four-point scale (0-3). Any local adverse effects were recorded. Results. There was no difference in the quality of block between the two groups. Side effects were noted in both groups with a significant increase in the incidence of local reaction (rash) in Group T (seven patients) when compared with Group P (one patient) (P0.05). Conclusions. Intradermal tramadol 5% can provide a local anaesthesia similar to the prilocaine but the incidence of local adverse effects is higher Daha fazlası Daha az

Potential role of dietary omega-3 essential fatty acids on some oxidant/antioxidant parameters in rats' corpus striatum

Sarsilmaz, M | Songur, A | Ozyurt, H | Kus, I | Ozen, OA | Ozyurt, B | Sogut, S

Article | 2003 | PROSTAGLANDINS LEUKOTRIENES AND ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS69 ( 4 ) , pp.253 - 259

Omega-3 (omega-3) is an essential fatty acid (EFA) found in large amounts in fish oil. It contains eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). DHA is one of the building structures of membrane phospholipids of brain and necessary for continuity of neuronal functions. Evidences support the hypothesis that schizophrenia may be the result of increased reactive oxygen species mediated neuronal injury. Recent reports also suggest the protective effect of omega-3 EFA against neuropsychiatric disorders including schizophrenia. This study proposed to assess the changes in antioxidant enzyme and oxidant parameters in the corpus str . . .iatum (CS) of rats fed with omega-3 EFA diet (0.4 g/kg/day) for 30 days. Eight control rats and nine rats fed with omega-3 were decapitated under ether anesthesia, and CS was removed immediately. Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and nitric oxide (NO) levels as well as total superoxide dismutase (t-SOD) and xanthine oxidase (XO) enzyme activities in the CS were measured. Rats treated with omega-3 EFA had significantly lower values of TBARS (P < 0.001), NO (P < 0.002) and XO (P < 0.005) whereas higher values of t-SOD enzyme activity (P < 0.002) than the control rats. These results indicate that omega-3 EFA rich fish oil diet reduces some oxidant parameters in CS. This may be revealed by means of reduced CS TBARS levels as an end product of lipid peroxidation of membranes in treated rats. Additionally, reduced XO activity and NO levels may support this notion. On the other hand, although the mechanism is not clear, omega-3 EFA may indirectly enhance the activity of antioxidant enzyme t-SOD. Taken together, this preliminary animal study provides strong support for a therapeutic effect of omega-3 EFA supplemented to classical neuroleptic regimen in the treatment of schizophrenic symptoms and tardive dyskinesia. Long-term fate of vascularized iliac bone flap as a source for phallic rigidity

Akoz, T | Kargi, E | Cakir, B

Article | 2003 | ANNALS OF PLASTIC SURGERY50 ( 5 ) , pp.504 - 509

One of the surgical goals of phalloplasty is to obtain sufficient rigidity for sexual penetration. This is also important for patients with erectile dysfunction. Different kinds of techniques have described phalloplasty and obtaining rigidity in patients with erectile dysfunction, but there is no good substitute for the erectile tissue of the penis. The authors used an iliac osteocutaneous flap for phalloplasty and a vascularized bone flap for imitating penile erection. Five patients who had undergone either phalloplasty or correction of erectile dysfunction are presented. Long-term results are promising in adults and the authors ad . . .vocate using vascularized iliac bone for sufficient rigidity of a (neo)phallus. However, the results are moderate for children who have undergone previous phalloplasty Daha fazlası Daha az

Correlation of serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-4 and soluble interleukin-2 receptor levels with radiologic and clinical manifestations in active pulmonary tuberculosis

Kart, L | Buyukoglan, H | Tekin, IO | Altin, R | Senturk, Z | Gulmez, I | Demir, R

Article | 2003 | MEDIATORS OF INFLAMMATION12 ( 1 ) , pp.9 - 14

THE precise clinical manifestations of tuberculosis are likely to result from a complex interaction between the host and the pathogen. We took serum samples from a group of patients with a variety of clinical and radiological stages of pulmonary tuberculosis in order to characterize tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-4 (IL-4) and soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) response. We further evaluated whether the levels of TNF-alpha, IL-4 and soluble IL-2R are related with each other, and also evaluated the levels of TNF-alpha, IL-4 and sIL-2R after anti-tuberculosis therapy and relation with radiologic scores. Forty . . .-three inpatients with active pulmonary tuberculosis and 19 healthy controls participated in the study. Patients were divided into four categories radiologically on chest X-ray ( minimal, moderate-advanced, far-advanced and with miliary infiltration). Concentrations of TNF-alpha (20.9 +/- 10/15.4 +/- 8 pg/ml) and sIL-2R (2569 +/- 842/1444 +/- 514 pg/ml) were statistically different between patients and controls ( p = 0.02 and p = 0.0001, respectively). Before chemotherapy there was a positive correlation between TNF-alpha and sIL-2R (r = 0.34), but there was no correlation between IL-4 and TNF-alpha, and between IL-4 and sIL-2R (r = -0.23 and r = -0.22). The TNF-alpha level was not statistically different in four groups before and after chemotherapy. Results of this study provided some evidence confirming the previously reported role of TNF-alpha, IL-4 and sIL 2R in the control of tuberculosis, but these cytokines were not found related with disease severity Daha fazlası Daha az

Sociological aspects of rhinoplasty

Babuccu, O | Latifoglu, O | Atabay, K | Oral, N | Cosan, B

Article | 2003 | AESTHETIC PLASTIC SURGERY27 ( 1 ) , pp.44 - 49

Although the psychological aspect of the rhinoplasty operation has been a subject of interest for a long time, with the exception of a few studies, sociological factors have been almost totally ignored. In this prospective study the personality characteristics and socioeconomic backgrounds of 216 rhinoplasty patients were evaluated. Between 1994 and 2000, a questionnaire and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) were given preoperatively to 157 females and 59 males. The MMPI was also given to age-matched people as a control. Six months after surgery, patients were called on the telephone and asked to rate their sati . . .sfaction. According to questionnaire, a great majority of the rhinoplasty patients were young, unmarried women with high education levels. In the rhinoplasty group, one or more scales of the inventory were not in the normal ranges in 45% of the patients, whereas this proportion in the control group was 28% (p < 0.01). When MMPI results are considered, female patients of this study could be described as egocentric, childish, highly active, impulsive, competitive, reactive, perfectionistic about themselves, talkative, and emotionally superficial. Male patients could be described as rigid, stubborn, over-sensitive, suspicious, perfectionistic, pessimistic, over-reactive, and having somatizations. Tension and anxiety with feelings of inferiority were found to be characteristics of the male patients. The satisfaction rate after six months was reported as 72%. There was no significant correlation between MMPI results and demographic variables, nor satisfaction rate. In conclusion, the rhinoplasty patients in our study are young people at the very beginning of their careers. It could be that their personalities and socioeconomic backgrounds combine to make aesthetic surgery rewarding enough, both socially and personally, to encourage them to follow through Daha fazlası Daha az

Indriven sphenoid wing as a cause of post-traumatic epilepsy

Sumer, MM | Atasoy, HT | Unal, A | Kalayci, M | Mahmutyazicioglu, K | Erdem, O

Article | 2003 | NEUROLOGICAL SCIENCES24 ( 4 ) , pp.268 - 271

Post-traumatic epilepsy is more frequent after severe head injuries, however the severity of the trauma is not always correlated with the injured brain tissue. We report a patient whose seizures developed 4 years after a face trauma. Upward displacement of the sphenoid wing caused a contusion at the orbital surface of the frontal lobe. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and electroencephalographic findings are presented. The patient responded well to commonly used antiepileptic drugs.
